A former Rhinelander high school English teacher has been sentenced for theft and drugs.
As part of a plea bargain to include several charges, 35 year old Joshua Juergens was given four years probation, and 31 additional days in jail. Juergens was arrested in September after a disturbance at his residence. Later a search warrant was served by police who found a computer belonging to Rhinelander high school and a marijuana grow operation. District Attorney Michael Schiek said four charges were dismissed after Juergens entered guilty pleas to theft and drug charges...
One person has died and another was injured in an early Wednesday morning disturbance at a downtown Rhinelander tavern.
Rhinelander Police Chief Michael Steffes reports they were called shortly after midnight to Sackett's Bar at 66 North Brown Street. When officers arrived, two individuals were on the floor. A 48 year old man died at the scene. The other person on the floor was transported to Ministry-St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.
Family members are being notified before the deceased person's name is released.
In 1745, the Ojibwe defeated the Lakota Sioux in a battle at a place called Strawberry Island, now on the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa reservation in Vilas county. It ended the Sioux dominance in this region. The island had been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, but to the Chippewa, it was a place of significant cultural and spiritual meaning that they did not own, until Monday.
While Wisconsin's overall unemployment rate continues to drop, Northwoods unemployment continues above state average. In Iron county's situation, they have the highest unemployment rate in the state.
State numbers released Thursday show Iron county at 13.2 percent, Vilas is fourth highest at 9.5 percent, Forest is at 8.1 percent, but Oneida, Lincoln and Langlade counties are lower in the 7 percent range. Price county is at 5.3 percent. Wisconsin's average is 5.8 percent.
