  Governor Scott Walker Monday stopped in Eagle River after signing his economic package. Governor Walker says he's on no tight timetable to make a decision whether to allow a multi-million dollar casino complex in Kenosha that is opposed by the Forest County Potawatomi Community. Walker told reporters the federal government took nine years to move forward on the Menominee tribe proposal at the former Dairyland Greyhound Park..

Rhinelander To Survey Residents On Outdoor Rec Desires

Assembly To Discuss Rural Education Issues

  Educators are optimistic some key points brought out during the recent Rural School Task Force will be part of the agenda in coming legislative sessions. Northland Pines District Administrator Mike Ritchie says while it's too late for a bill this session,  as Thursday is likely the final day for the Assembly this term, he says the discussion will set the stage for a focus on three key issues.    City of Rhinelander residents have been asked to run their water until further notice to keep lines from freezing up. The state Public Service Commission is asking you to check your other plumbing to make sure you're not wasting water. This is "Fix A Leak Week". The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin is partnering with the E.P.A.'s WaterSense program to draw attention to the water leaks. Denise Schmidt...the PSC's Water Conservation Coordinator...says the amount of water wasted each year is enormous...

Oneida Co. Sells Former WPS Building For $340K Loss

  After several years of sitting idle and just a few offers, the Oneida county board accepted a bid Tuesday authorizing the sale of the former WPS building near the courthouse. The original asking price was more than $500,000 in 2008. The county sold the building to Midwest Lease, LLC for $185,000. The  vote was 15-3 to sell the building. County Land Information Director Mike Romportl said Midwest Lease owner Leo Krivikas could not attend the meeting, but told Romportl the reason for the lower asking price was the building needs work...

Facade Update In Downtown Rhinelander's 2016 Plan

  Last week, the Rhinelander city council approved a $20,000 commitment to bolster an effort to help businesses downtown redo their facades. The money is contingent on another $60,000 state grant being available. The city is also planning a major utility upgrade down Brown Street in 2016. The street would also have a new look after construction. Downtown Rhinelander Incorporated Director Maggie Steffen says that group is working toward an eventual $250,000 program so downtown businesses can redo the front of their buildings if they choose...

LDF Death Leads To Arrests For Heroin Distribution

The death of a 54 year old woman in Lac du Flambeau on March 3 for what's believed to be a drug overdose has led police to arrest six persons for heroin distribution. Tribal Police report they were called mid-afternoon March 3 and found the woman unresponsive.
