Name Of Vilas County Traffic Victim Released

Vilas  county authorities have released the name of the man who died in a crash early Thursday morning in the town of Manitowish Waters.


20 year old Ezekiel Jonas of Manitowish Waters was killed in the single-vehicle wreck.


The crash happened near the intersection of Alder Lkae Road and Powell Road. When emergency responders arrived, they found a pickup truck had struck a tree. officials used a metal-cutting tool to pull the truck's driver from the vehicle. The driver was alone in the vehicle.

Lac du Flambeau Tribe's Shullsburg Proposal Returns

After little action for a long time, the Bureau of Indian Affairs is beginning gathering information for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement for the Lac du Flambeau Tribe's fee-to-trust transfer and casino project in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. Shullsburg is located near the Illinois border near Platteville.

The tribe would like to operate a gaming facility at Shullsburg, along with it's operation in Lac du Flambeau.

Local Governments Handcuffed Regulating Cell Tower Locations

A little-known provision of the recently-passed state budget bill puts severe restraints on local governments and citizens trying to stop placement of new cell towers.

Local governments can no longer deny wireless tower permits soley for aesthetic reasons, or limit the height of the towers under 200 feet or require them to be on public property.

Historic Rhinelander Stone Pillars Get Restored

An entrance into a Rhinelander residential area with an historic background is getting a facelift thanks to the donation from a Rhinelander benefactor.

Two stone pillars at the intersection of Highview Parkway and Pelican Street in Rhinelander are being updated after falling into disrepair. Mayor Dick Johns said the city was approached by a resident who wanted to know if something could be done to fix the entrance. While the concensus was the crumbling stone needed work, Johns said they didn't have any extra money. That was solved...

Effort To Get Counties BadgerCare Money

Oneida and Lincoln county are two of twenty counties asking the state to help run a pilot program supporting health care for poor people.


The state of Wisconsin refused to accept additional dollars from the federal government to cover the cost of a portion of BadgerCare, or Medicaid.


Following the lead from Ohio, the 20 counties would like the state to allow the money to flow directly to the counties.

Motorists and pedestrians in Minocqua Wednesday will be seeing a new pedestrian crossing device called a "HAWK".

Northwoods LWV Chapter Earns Official Membership

The League of Women Voters aims to protect voting rights for underrepresented groups.

The Northwoods now hosts its own full-fledged chapter of the League of Women Voters.  The group’s mission is to protect voting rights for groups that are underrepresented.  

Chapter spokeswoman Jane Trotter says the nonpartisan group was founded in 1920 to get women the right to vote.

“After that, we realized there were a lot of other people who needed the right the vote.  The people who are most fragile in terms of their voting rights are first time voters, youth that are not in college, new citizens, minorities, the elderly and low income Americans.”

Vilas Co. Supervisors Share Insights On Budget, Deficit

There were a couple of "firsts" at the Vilas County board of supervisors meeting Tuesday night. For the first time, their regular board meeting was held at the Arbor Vitae town hall. And for the first time, they participated in a special information gathering session.

Nancy Anne Miller, head of UW-extension in Vilas county, facilitated the process, passing the microphone from one supervisor to the next to hear their feedback on goals for upcoming budgets.

Homeless Count In Northwoods Set For July 31

The Northern Wisconsin Initiative To Stop Homelessness Continuum of Care will conduct their bi-annual count of the homeless on July 31.


Lori Hallas from Forward Service Corporation says the "Point In Time" count finds volunteers and staff going out in the region to get an idea of how many people are without shelter....
