Northwoods Land Trust Protecting More Land

The Northwoods Land Trust reports another successful year preserving lands for future generations.

The Northwoods Land Trust  is a non-profit conservation organization  in Eagle River. They work with property owners, accepting conservation easements on property with natural or scenic resource values. After conservation easement is granted, the land trust provides long-term stewardship following the landowner's wishes.

Ken Krall spoke with Trust Executive Director Bryan Pierce. He says it was a good year.

Conference Aimed at Women in Business

A conference this week focuses on networking and skill sharing for women in business. 

It’s hosted by Nicolet College and the Northwoods Women in Business networking group.

Organizer Michelle Madl-Soehren says the one-day conference is designed for women already involved in business or thinking of starting one.

Rhinelander Area Food Pantry Gets Matching Funds

Facade Update In Downtown Rhinelander's 2016 Plan

  Last week, the Rhinelander city council approved a $20,000 commitment to bolster an effort to help businesses downtown redo their facades. The money is contingent on another $60,000 state grant being available. The city is also planning a major utility upgrade down Brown Street in 2016. The street would also have a new look after construction. Downtown Rhinelander Incorporated Director Maggie Steffen says that group is working toward an eventual $250,000 program so downtown businesses can redo the front of their buildings if they choose...

LDF Death Leads To Arrests For Heroin Distribution

The death of a 54 year old woman in Lac du Flambeau on March 3 for what's believed to be a drug overdose has led police to arrest six persons for heroin distribution. Tribal Police report they were called mid-afternoon March 3 and found the woman unresponsive.

Iron County Votes to Evict Harvest Camp

The Harvest Camp, or Harvest Education Learning Project, has been in existence since last spring.

The Iron County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to close the Lac Courte Oreilles Harvest Camp Thursday night, saying residents are violating a 14-day camping limit on county forest land. 

About 30 people attended the meeting, most speaking in support of what’s officially called the Harvest Education Learning Project, or HELP Village.  An hour of public comment was followed by an hour in closed session, where county supervisors consulted with legal counsel.  A motion to close the camp passed 13 votes to 0, with two members absent.

Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. Makes Call For Artists

  A call for artists has come from Downtown Rhinelander, Incorporated. To  raise money for downtown projects each fall, D.R.I. auctions off decorated mini-Hodags which are painted in the spring and displayed at various locations through the summer. D.R.I. Director Maggie Steffen says they need artists in the region to come forward and transform the mini-Hodags into works of art...

Updated Grand Piano To Debut This Sunday at RHS

  Not many schools have a Grand Piano, but you have a chance to hear one this Sunday for free and benefit the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry at the same time. Funding for the  newly restored Steinway Model B Grand  was made possible by a grant from the Hodag Schools Foundation and a gift by Dori Brown. Rhinelander students from grades 4 through 12 will perform a variety of selections  including pieces by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Lorrie Line and George and Ira Gershwin. Superintendent Kelli Jacobi says the event is part of recognizing music in the schools..
