Conover Residence Burns

A home burns in Roseville, CA.

Fire destroyed a vacation home in Vilas County Monday.  Wisconsin Electric discovered the fire just before 11 am while responding to a nearby power outage. The structure on North Hunter Lake Road in Conover was unoccupied at the time, and the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department reports the property was a complete loss.  The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but authorities believe it to have been weather related.

Direct from Memphis, Eric Scrappie Hughes or the "Boss of Beale Street" as he's known, brought his deep river blues to the Northwoods August 24th. Floating down the Wisconsin River took on a real Delta feel with Scrappie's authentic delivery of original compositions and blues classics.

No Call List Deadline August 31

Saturday is the deadline if you want to stop pesky telemarketers from calling your personal telephones.

Wisconsin's "No Call" list allows citizens to sign up for free and have two years without commercial telemarketing calls.

State Legislators To Hear Veteran's Concerns

Three area state legislators are holding a listening session August 28  for area veterans.

State Senator Tom Tiffany, and Representatives Rob Swearingen and Mary Czaja will be holding the meeting along with state Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos.

Numbers Of New Tick Diseases Rising

As many as 300,000 people each year could have Lyme disease, about 10 times the number that has been established. The Centers For Disease Control made that estimate last week.

Oneida County Health Director Linda Conlon says reported Lyme Disease numbers have held steady here over the last few years... 

"....114 for 2012, 106 for 2011, and then total between probable, suspect and confirmed the year before, in 2010, was 115..."

BIA Gives Nod to Menominee Tribe Kenosha Casino

A spokesman for the Menominee Nation says the U-S Bureau of Indian Affairs has approved plans to build a casino. The proposed casino will be built at the old Dairyland Greyhound Park near Kenosha. The old racetrack has been closed since 2009.

School of the Arts: Many Hands and Much Work

Each summer Rhinelander gets hit with what amounts to an explosion of creativity: School of the Arts Rhinelander sets up camp for five days in a local middle school, and holds a slew of art classes for adults.  2013 marked the program's 50th anniversary.

Even though more than half of the 150 students enrolled in School of the Arts are newcomers, it’s not hard to spot the longtime attendees.  They’re wearing nametags with colored ribbons to indicate their veteran status. Lee Densmore sports a tag marking 15 years.  He’s here for a poetry class.

Company Buys Otter Rapids Dam From WPS

Wisconsin Public Service has entered into negotiations to sell the Otter Rapids dam to Renewable World Energies.

The dam forms much of what is known at the Eagle River chain of lakes.

WPS spokesperson Kerry Spees says the sale is pending federal approval, but says the new owner isn't going to change the hydroelectric operation...

"...the key thing is nothing will change for the community of Eagle River and the surrounding area in terms of the water situation and the Chain of Lakes. We knew that's what everyone would be most concerned about..."
