Elcho Clerk-Treasurer Faces 43 Charges

The town of Elcho's clerk-treasurer has been charged with 43 counts of misconduct in public office and forgery in Langlade county.


Online court records indicate 43 year old Melissa Bloechl of Elcho is facing one theft charge in excess of $10,000, two counts of forgery and forty counts of misconduct in public office. The complaint was filed Wednesday.

Fatal Traffic Crash In Oneida County

A 90 year old Wood county woman has died from a one vehicle crash in Oneida county.


The Oneida county sheriff's department reports Dorothy Tyler of Vesper died at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau of injuries sustained Tuesday morning. She died early Wednesday.


Deputies report the vehicle she was in, driven by 73 year old Ronald Tyler of Vesper, went out of control on county highway "Q" in the town of Schoepke and crashed.

Cash Bond Set For Suspect In Shooting of Uncle

A Rhinelander man has been charged with the Monday shooting of his uncle.


23 year old Marcus L. Alsteens of 645 Mason Street is charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery, negligent handling of a weapon, and injury by negligent use of a dangerous weapon, all with domestic abuse.

Thursday: DNR to Hear Comments on Penokee Mine

The public has its first chance to share opinions with the Department of Natural Resources on the Gogebic Taconite mine proposal.  The DNR is holding a hearing Thursday at Hurley High School, from 10 am until 8 pm.  DNR Hydrologist Larry Lynch says DNR officials are hoping for feeback on the specifics of GTac’s plan for bulk sampling and testing of the proposed mine site in Iron and Ashland Counties.  The public can also comment on the preapplication for mining filed by GTac - the first step in the permitting process.

Honoring Cancer Patients, Present and Past

Rhinelander’s Ministry St. Mary’s Hospital is hosting a gathering for cancer survivors.  

It’s the sixth annual Celebration of Life.  Event organizer Kim Hetland is a Manager in Radiation Oncology at Ministry’s James Beck Cancer Center.  She says the evening is also a chance to honor those lost to cancer. 

“We wanted it more than just a cancer survivor event.  We wanted it more of a celebration – of life, that would honor not only our cancer survivors but also our patients that have passed on.”

Meeting set for U.S. 51 Reconstruction in Hazelhurst, Cassian

The DOT has set a public hearing date for later this month to take comment on the proposed reconstruction of U.S. 51 in Hazelhurst and Cassian.

Minocqua's portion of the road work is being done this year. Hazelhurst to the south of Minocqua and Woodruff to the north have both challenged the DOT concerning plans in those towns, as has Arbor Vitae in Vilas county.
