Transforming a Middle School - Temporarily

School of the Arts Rhinelander is still underway; it wraps up on Wednesday.  The five-day art school for adults takes place at the James Williams middle school, where the cafeteria and dozens of classrooms undergo a big changeover – practically overnight.  School of the Arts Facilities Manager Beth Bloom says it’s not an easy task.  She hires a team of 9 high school students to help with the shuffle.

Northern National Readies for Opening Night

The Northern National Art Competition opens Tuesday.

Tuesday night marks the opening of the Northern National Art Competition at Nicolet College.  

The exhibition features 86 works from around the country.  Visual artist James Pace selected the pieces.  At the opening reception Pace will speak about why he chose the works he did, and announce the winning recipients of  $8500 in total prize money.  Pace says the selections in the show represent a wide variety of media, styles and subjects.

Price County Authorities Identify Traffic Victim

Price county authorities have released the name of a person killed Thursday in a one vehicle traffic crash.


75 year old Everett Crist of Phillips died in the accident on East Solberg Lake Road in the town of Worcester. The car hit a power pole and overturned. Crist was pronounced dead at the scene.

15 Miles In Vilas County To Be Repaved In 2014

The public is invited to a meeting called by the Department of Transportation concerning the repaving of 15 miles of road in Vilas county next year.


DOT Project Manager Dan Erva outlines what the DOT would like to do...



"....in Vilas county from county highway "M" to county highway "W". The DOT is planning on resurfacing the highway to address the deteriorating pavement. Construction is scheduled for the summer of 2014..."



The stretch from county "M" to "W" is about 15 miles.

Horse Owners Warned To Get Animals Vaccinated

The outbreak of mosquitoes this summer is prompting state officials to remind horse owners to get their animals vaccinated against Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus.

TB Outbreak In Northwoods Highly Unlikely

National Public Radio recently reported a number of tuberculosis cases were confirmed in the Sheboygan area this spring. A Northwoods public health nurse says there is no widespread outbreak and nothing reported here.


 


The Sheboygan outbreak was found in an immigrant family. Officials quickly jumped in, and now think it's contained. Officials think Sheboygan could end up with 15 symptomatic cases and up to 200 people infected with the resistant strain but not yet showing symptoms.

Vilas Co. Joins Oneida With Dead Bird

The Vilas County Public Health Department reports a dead crow found in Vilas County on Tuesday and has tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first bird that tested positive for West Nile virus in Vilas County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1. A dead crow was also found this week in Oneida county.

WPS Plans Underground Powerline Installation

WPS is hoping to improve electricity reliability by getting power lines out of the way of trees.

Public utility regulators have approved a $220 million project to bury certain power lines.  


Wisconsin Public Service plans to convert more than a thousand miles of overhead power lines to underground ones.  Todd Steffen from WPS says the project should create more reliable electric service for Northwoods customers.
