Name Of Crash Victim Released

The Vilas County Sheriff's office has identified the victim of a fatal crash as James Luedtke. Only one vehicle was involved in the Fourth of July accident that occurred just before 7:00 p.m. in the town of  Presque Isle, near the intersection of County Highways P and W. The driver, 22 year old Luedtke from Milwaukee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Two Arrested After ATV Crash Near Tomahawk

Two Tomahawk area ATV drivers were arrested Thursday after both of their vehicles collided near Tomahawk.


A Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy reported seeing the pair westbound on county "A" at the U.S. 51 intersection. The deputy lost sight of the operators but found them crashed at Moodig Road.


The report indicates both drivers lost control at the Moodig intersection, with the first driver trying to turn sharply and losing control and the second driver crashing into the first ATV.

Parade Crowds Bring Reflection, and a Business Boost

Many communities marked the holiday Thursday with a Fourth of July parade.  Rhinelander’s celebration drew a crowd of thousands. WXPR spoke with a few parade goers about what Fourth of July means to them.  

Those crowds also meant a robust day for downtown businesses.  

Rhinelander’s Brown Street was bursting with people during the Fourth of July parade.  Flustered lemonade vendor Max Holperin says it’s the busiest day of the year.  He's already sold hundreds of cups of lemonade.

Ninety-Nine Fourths Under Its Hood, And Going Strong

Among the floats, clowns and marching bands at the Rhinelander Independence Day parade was one vintage car celebrating its 99th Fourth of July.  The Ford Model T has been in the owner’s family throughout its long life.

George Scholz is adjusting the gas on his car’s old fashioned headlight before the parade.  Though he’s been bringing his Model T to the Rhinelander parade for more than a decade, he’s been driving it for way longer.

Man Injured Early Thursday Near Tomahawk

A 24 year old man has received serious injuries after falling off a golf cart early Thursday morning.


The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department reports a call around 2:30 a.m. to Chapman Cove Road in the town of Bradley. Deputies found the man fell off the moving cart while operating on private property. The victim suffered neck and face injuries. He was first taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk, then airlifted to Aspirus Wausau Hospital. His name and identity were not released.

Fire At Long-Time Arbor Vitae Business

Fire severely damaged a main building at Pukall Lumber on Highway 70 in Arbor Vitae Wednesday afternoon.


Firefighters from Arbor Vitae, Woodruff and Minocqua, Plum Lake, St. Germain. Little Rice and Lake Tomahawk were on the scene after the call came in shortly after 3:00 p.m.


Reports indicate the fire was in one of the older buildings at the well-known business, which housed a panel shop, molding and floor planer.


No injuries were reported. Highway 70 was closed for about an hour while fire units were arriving.

This July Fourth, Be Careful With Those Fireworks

Lighting fireworks at home can be risky.

For some people Fourth of July is the perfect excuse to play with fire…but it can also be the perfect time to cause an accident or an injury.  That’s the message from Oneida County health officials, who are warning people to use caution around fireworks.  

Public Health nurse Rob Deede says this isn’t the time for experimentation.

Nicolet Ramps Up Welding Program

Nicolet Area Technical College is partnering with manufacturing company Oldenburg Group.

Nicolet Area Technical College is working with Oldenburg Group, which has a facility west of  Rhinelander, to get more welders in the workforce.

Oldenburg makes equipment for military operations and mining.

Dean of Trades and Industry at Nicolet, Brigitte Parsons says the increased emphasis on programs like welding shows a growing need in the marketplace.

While Governor Walker is traveling the state touting the benefits of the recently signed state budget, Democrats say the document promotes Walker's friends while leaving many behind.

In a prepared address, Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca says the budget forgets much about Wisconsin's past.

Gas Prices Fall In Time For July Fourth Travel

Gas prices have fallen more than almost 50 cents since last month.

Wisconsin gas prices continue to fall, and that’s great news for July Fourth holiday travelers.

Petroleum Analyst for the website gasbuddy.com, Gregg Laskoski, says the national average has fallen has fallen from $3.64 to $3.49 per gallon.  In Wisconsin the decrease has been more dramatic, from $3.93 a month ago down to $3.44 today.

"Wisconsin was hit hard as part of the Great Lakes region and the Plains states that really had tremendous refinery and supply problems from mid-May up until recent weeks..."
