The Lac du Flambeau Chief of Police says more arrests are coming. Last week, "Operation Pandora" was launched by several law enforcement agencies on the reservation to stem the tide of synthetic and pharmaceutical drugs being sold.


Dozens of people were arrested as warrants were served.

Gov.Walker Seeks Vilas Sheriff Applicants

Governor Walker has asked for applications for appointment to the vacant sheriff's job in Vilas county.


Sheriff Frank Tomlanovich died last week after a short illness.


 


The new sheriff will begin serving upon appointment and will complete a term ending January 5, 2015.


An applicant must reside in Vilas County at the time the appointment becomes effective.

For Your Ears Only: The Secret of Skeleton Lake

The Secret of Skeleton Lake will be performed Saturday, June 29th.

Old-time radio drama is having a revival this Saturday at Nicolet College.

It’s a benefit for the for Rhinelander social services organization the Family Resource Connection.  The performance is called “The Secret of Skeleton Lake: a Doc Merriweather Radio Mystery Show.”  WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski sat down with Northwoods summer resident Joe McHugh, who wrote and directed the play. 

In addition to his work in radio drama McCugh is a writer and producer of the public radio series American Family Stories.

With the severe weather in the region, Wisconsin Public Service officials say call them, not 9-1-1, if you see a problem.


Leah Van Zile from WPS says it's best to call them before the local police dispatch for a power-related problem...



"we really want to avoid bogging down the true, life-threatening emergencies at the 9-1-1 center.....calling Wisconsin Public Service if you do see something is the most efficient and really the best way to handle those..."

Motorcycle Crash Victim Named

Price county officials have released the name of the motorcycle crash victim Monday in the town of Lake.


The driver was identified as 71 year old Gary Cooley of Park Falls.


The sheriff's department reports Cooley's motorcycle went out of control on county road "E" about 1 p.m. The motorycycle was traveling west when it veered off the road and overturned.


Cooley was taken to a Marshfield hospital where he died Tuesday.

Rhinelander Man Charged with Mail Fraud, Identity Theft

A Rhinelander man has been charged in federal court with three counts of mail fraud and one count of identity theft.


42 year old John E. Henricks the third is the owner of Custom Collision...a Rhinelander auto body repair shop and three vehicle-towing businesses, Rick's Towing, Tom's Towing and Hodag Towing.

Unemployment Rates Fall In Northwoods

Northwoods unemployment rates fell slightly last month.

The unemployment rate for most Northwoods counties has slipped below double-digits.

The Department of Workforce Development monthly unemployment numbers for May show the lowest rate in the region in Price county at 6.8 percent, Oneida at 8.3, Langlade 8.6, Lincoln 8.8, Forest 9.1, Vilas 9.3 and Iron county the second-highest in the state at 11.5.

Drug Raid in Lac Du Flambeau

Authorities made more than 20 arrests Wednesday during early morning raids on residences in Lac du Flambeau.


Tribal officials called it "Operation Pandora". More than 40 law enforcement officials from 11 agencies were involved to curtail the use of synthetic and prescription drugs.


Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police Chief Bob Brandenburg said the raids were the first wave of efforts to stop illegal drugs on the reservation.
