Antigo Woman Charged With Welfare Fraud

An Antigo woman is facing a felony charge in Oneida county of Public Assistance fraud after investigators allege she was given $22,000 more dollars in benefits than she had coming.


33 year old Nicole Young made an initial appearance Wednesday in Oneida County Circuit Court.


The criminal complaint says Young was living at a residence in Hazelhurst and allegedly obtained food stamps while making false representations. The alleged fraud lasted from 2008 through 2012.

Vilas Board Gets ACT 10 Update

You might have noticed that your county board is going through major change.

The impetus for the change stems from implementation of Act 10, the controversial legislation enacted into law two years ago that bans most public employee unions in Wisconsin. The legality of the law will be decided by the state Supreme Court. In the meantime, counties are struggling to handle their vastly increased responsibilities.

Tobacco Companies Shift Tactics From Smoke To Candy

An anti-tobacco advocate says the public might have relaxed about smoking in public, but tobacco companies continue to target youth.


The Northwoods Tobacco-Free Coalition held a "Lunch and Learn" session to talk about the change in corporate tobacco marketing techniques. Many tobacco products are made to look like candy. With fewer adults smoking, the goal, say anti-tobacco advocates is to get younger people interested in tobacco.

State Legislator Says Budget Will Help Northern Schools

State Senator Tom Tiffany says the biennial budget that passed the legislature last week has some positives for northern Wisconsin.

The Senate approved the Assembly-passed plan early Friday and sent it to Governor Walker.

Tiffany says the $68 billion spending plan will help northern schools...especially those districts within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest... hit with declining enrollments. The budget moves money from towns and provides money to the school districts within the forest...

Opinions Vary Widely At Forestry Policy Conference

Dialog was evident Monday during the Forestry Policy Conference held in Carter.


Three Congressional members, U.S. Forest Service represenatives, state legislators and department heads, tribal representatives, and business interests discussed timber management, mainly in Wisconsin and Michigan's national forests.

Social Services Report Said To Be "Heartbreaking"

An annual report filed by the Oneida County Department of Social Services has stirred one board member to call portions of the report..."heartbreaking".


During last week's county board meeting, Carol Pederson, a member of the county Social Services committee said after reading the detailed report...



".....to think there is so much dysfunction in families in our county breaks my heart. But I'm very proud with what the Department of Social Services is doing...."
