Heritage Fest to Celebrate Northwoods Roots

Next weekend, June 29-30, a festival in Three Lakes highlights the heritages that make up the Northwoods.

The Northwoods Heritage Fest in Three Lakes Saturday and Sunday features a full festival dedicated  to German, Italian, Polish, Irish and Wisconsin, USA,  and Three Lakes heritages.
Skip Brunswick from the Three Lakes Chamber says there will be much to see.

Social Services Report Said To Be "Heartbreaking"

An annual report filed by the Oneida County Department of Social Services has stirred one board member to call portions of the report..."heartbreaking".


During last week's county board meeting, Carol Pederson, a member of the county Social Services committee said after reading the detailed report...



".....to think there is so much dysfunction in families in our county breaks my heart. But I'm very proud with what the Department of Social Services is doing...."

Federal Timber Sales Money Going To NW Schools

Barring an unexpected gubernatorial veto, area school districts next year will be getting money from the U.S. Forest Service timber sales revenue.


State Representative Jeff Mursau of Crivitz...whose district includes Forest and Marinette counties...says the budget has allocated 25 percent of sales to area schools.


Mursau says to this point all the money gathered went to infrastructure for the towns inside national forest lands.

Digging Into Mining Ordinances

Iron County residents have a chance to brush up on their understanding of local zoning ordinances that regulate mining.  The Iron County Citizen’s Forum is hosting speaker George Meyer, executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Foundation and former secretary of the state’s Department of Natural Resources.  Terry Daulton with the Iron County Citizen’s Forum says it will help inform people about how communities deal with mining activities.

Governor Scott Walker has extended his sympathies to the family of Frank Tomlanovich, the Vilas County Sheriff who died Thursday after a short illness.

Gov. Walker Signs Bills Promoting ATV's in Wisconsin

Governor Walker signed two bills in Tomahawk Friday afternoon promoting ATV use and outdoor recreation.


The first bill allows kids at least 12 years of old to ride an ATV/UTV on private land with property owner consent and if accompanied by an adult.


The second bill establishes an off-road vehicle council within the DNR. The council will make recommendations on trails, grants and other issues.


Walker says both bills will help promote the sport...

State Apprenticeship Program Reaches Out

The state workforce development agency and Nicolet College are putting the spotlight on manufacturing apprenticeship programs in northern Wisconsin.  The agency held an outreach session Friday for local manufacturers.

The program is designed for workers who are already employed by a company.  During the apprenticeship the employee keeps getting paid, and spends ten percent of his or her time in school at a technical college.  In Oneida County, that means Nicolet College.  Ben Stahlecker from the Department of Workforce Development…says it’s a win-win situation.
