State-Youth Tribal Partnership Proposed

As part of an effort to stock more walleyes into Wisconsin lakes, the state last week announced a $13 million dollar plan to boost larger walleye fingerlings.


One part of the overall initiative was $250,000 to expand the summer Tribal Youth program, a state-tribal partnership giving high school aged tribal members the opportunity to work on natural resources related projects.

Vilas Deputy Wins Military Silver Star

A deputy with the Vilas County Sheriff's Department will be receiving the nation's third-highest military combat decoration on Memorial Day.



Deputy Greg Fulton, also a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army, will get the Silver Star from the Army Monday at Volk Field during a ceremony. The Silver Star is being awarded to First Sergeant Fulton for his leadership and participation in combat operations in Afghanistan.


He's worked for Vilas county for 13 years. He is also certified as a law enforcement trainer.

Rhinelander Man Sent To Prison For Assault

A Rhinelander man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for an attack on a his wife in Rhinelander in February, 2012.


38 year old Shannon Wolf had reached a plea agreement, accepting charges of aggravated battery and mayhem instead of attempted homicide.


Prosecutor Scott Moeller said Wolf had an extensive prior criminal record including two stints in prison. He said the incident that day included Wolf hitting with his vehicle the car his wife was riding in, approaching the vehicle and breaking the glass...

Fire Destroys Rhinelander West Side Dwelling

No serious injuries early Friday but a four-unit dwelling is a total loss after a fire at the 200 block of West Hill drive on Rhinelander's west side.


Fire Chief Terry Williams said they got called out about 2 a.m....



"....once we got on the scene, the structure was fully involved. There were five occupants in the structure at the time. All the occupants got out prior to our arrival. Three had to jump from second story windows. There are some minor injuries, some people were transported to the hospital..."

Rhinelander Has Badger 5 Winner

 


Someone who bought a Wisconsin Lottery Badger 5 ticket in Rhinelander is wealthier today.


The state lottery office reports a Badger 5 ticket sold at Trig's Food and Drug won $293,000 dollars in Wednesday night's drawing.


The ticket holder has 180 days to claim the prize. Badger 5 is a one dollar daily lotto game with jackpots starting at $10,000 and grow a minimum of one-thousand dollars a day. Players win the rolling jackpot by matching their five numbers to the five winning numbers drawn each night.

The Oneida County Board has seen the future, if it already isn't the present.


UW-Extension Community Resource Development Agent Tim Brown and businessman Don Sidlowski from Three Lakes presented board with what high-speed internet, or broadband will mean when fully implemented.


Rural residents have been lobbying for access to fast internet to help business and public agencies compete in an interconnected world.

Minocqua Student A Finalist at Nat-Geo

A Minocqua seventh-grader fell short Wednesday of winning one of the top two spots in the National Geographic Bee.


13-year-old Asha Jain was among 10 finalists competing in Washington. The winner was 12-year-old Sathwik Karnik of Plainville Massachusetts.

Northwoods Unemployment Remains Above Average

Jobless numbers remain at or near 10 percent for much of the Northwoods but a state economist says one trend could be improving news.


The Department of Workforce Development jobless numbers include April unemployment numbers of 14.1 percent in Iron county, second highest in the state. Vilas was third at 12.3 percent, Forest was sixth highest at 10.9 percent, Oneida county was ninth highest at 10.3 percent, Lincoln and Langlade counties had rates of 9.7 and 9.6 percent respectively.

OC Board Asks State To Get Fed Medicaid Money

The Oneida County Board has asked the Wisconsin legislature to accept federal Medicaid funds to continue BadgerCare. Governor Walker and Republican leaders have indicated they don't want the money.


Several speakers told the board accepting the money would hurt more than help.


A Board of Health Member...Jackie Cody...says 88,000 parents would be without health coverage from BadgerCare if the money is not accepted. The program does require a payment to be in it...
