Rhinelander Discusses Cell Phone Ban While Driving

Rhinelander could be the next community banning the use of cell phones while driving.

A committee Tuesday agreed to look into the ban over the next 30 days.

Alderman GeorgeKirby brought the request forward, saying he's concerned about safety...

 

"....we've(all) seen somebody not driving properly, not paying attention while driving...on the way here I kept track and there (were) 12 people on cellphones between my house and city hall...."

Rhinelander HS Juniors Learn "Mad Money"

Kids wonder why they can't always get money from their parents. Tuesday, Juniors at Rhinelander high school learned from a simulation why their parents sometimes say no.

Students do paperwork to see if they can budget items like food, child care, living expenses and savings on the money they are given. Jacob Froseth is working part-time now and sees how that isn't enough to get by..

Vilas Supervisors OK New Secretary in D.A's Office

That's Vilas County District Attorney Al Moustakis, addressing Tuesday’s meeting of the Vilas county board of Supervisors about an agreement reached with the Lac du Flambeau tribe to pay for a full time secretary in the DA’s office…

Two Attempted Homicide Cases Go Forward

Two suspects have been bound over for trial in two separate Northwoods attempted first-degree homicide trials.

In Forest county, 30 year old Brandon Brunette was bound over for trial and entered not guilty pleas to three other felony and misdemeanor charges including child abuse. Brunette is charged with allegedly tossing a one-year-old child hard enough to cause a brain injury last October. He denies the allegations.

The child was transported to a Marshfield hospital for his injuries. Brunette has a pre-trial set for May.

Skiers Persevere Through Cold, Snowy Birkie Course

More than ten thousand skiers competed last weekend in the American Birkebeiner ski race.  A foot of snow leading up to race day made for challenging conditions.

Single digit temperatures and fierce winds made for a cold start line early Saturday morning. Cross country skiers in brightly-colored spandex stretched their limbs and sprinted to make their start time. 

Pam Fashingbauer of Minocqua prepared for her first ever 54 kilometer classic race, after overcoming a shoulder injury from last summer.

Blues Friday Host Dale Zimmerman presents “The Songs of Willie Dixon”

Willie Dixon was one of the most prolific blues songwriters of all time, having penned over 500 songs in his career. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters recorded many of them, and several of Willie's songs have been transformed into rock and roll classics by artists such as Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and Cream.

On Friday March 7th, from 6-9 pm, Blues Friday host Dale Zimmerman presents “The Songs of Willie Dixon.” Tune in and enjoy rare and brilliant performances of some of the best blues music ever written.

GBBC Reaches An International Audience

They didn't all fly south, as a local bird watcher says good numbers of birds were seen in the Northwoods during a recent count.

The Great Backyard Bird Count has grown to an international event says Bob Dall of Rhinelander. He says with the global reach of the Internet, birders can go online and watch as data comes in, collected two weekends ago across the planet....

 

"....in our own county, Oneida county, I think 43 checklists were turned in. More than 200 birds were observed with 22 species, from just those folks who participated...."

In February, Remember Your Heart

Eating fruits and vegetables is one way to reduce your risk for heart disease.

Valentine’s Day may be over but there are still plenty of ways to take care of your heart.

February is Heart Health Month.

Oneida County Public Health Department is encouraging people of all ages to try and reduce risk factors for heart disease. 

Community health specialist Kyla Waksmonski  says behavior changes include daily exercise, healthy eating and limiting alcohol use.  Quitting smoking can also cut your risk of heart disease.

Ruby's Pantry Heading to Lac du Flambeau

Ruby's Pantry will deliver to Lac du Flambeau on the second Tuesdays of each month.

Ruby’s Pantry will deliver to another distribution site in the Northwoods.  Lac du Flambeau will host the once-a-month food distribution on second Tuesdays at the Bingo Hall.    

Gloria Cobb is a case worker with the Lac du Flambeau economic support department.  She says many families in the area are feeling the financial strain.
