Monday morning, Rhinelander and Oneida county will host the annual Memorial Day services at the Davenport Street Bridge and the county courthouse lawn. But following the 11:00 a.m. ceremony, those gathered at the courthouse could also see a special dedication at a local cemetery.

Committee Recommends Smaller Wolf Hunt for 2014

This year will mark the third wolf hunt in Wisconsin since wolves since wolves were removed from the state's endangered species list.

State officials still want to shrink Wisconsin’s wolf population, but at a much slower rate.

The state’s Wolf Advisory Committee has recommended a harvest of 156 wolves this fall – more than a hundred fewer than last year.

DNR Carnivore Specialist Dave MacFarland says that’s because the population is shrinking.  Recent state counts put the wolf population at about 660, down from 809 the previous winter.

“A stable quota on a smaller population would represent a much higher rate and would result in accelerating population decline.”

Just before the county board election seven weeks ago, postcard sized political ads appeared in the mailboxes of four specific Oneida county board districts. The professionally produced cards had a similar message, questioning the county board supervisors positions on the sale of the former WPS building and also about the removal of dams in the county's comprehensive plan.

Winter Hinders Housing Market in April

Home sales compared to last year dropped for the fourth straight month in April, with the trend more dramatic in the northern part of the state.

According to the Wisconsin Realtors Association…northern home sales in April were down more than 17 percent compared to April of last year.  Statewide the drop was almost 12 percent. 

CEO of the Wisconsin Realtors Association Mike Theo says even though it’s getting warmer…we’re still feeling the effects of a long cold winter.

Monthly Breakfast Hopes for More Diners

A new community breakfast has its second installment Wednesday.  A pair of business owners is organizing a free breakfast once a month at the VFW in Rhinelander.

Organizer Nancy Smith says the idea for Coffee and Company began last fall. 

“It was last October.  We started thinking – we saw the people roaming the streets in downtown Rhinelander, and the first thing it started as just coffee and a sweet roll.”

A spokesperson says a goal  is to have mental illness viewed in the same light as any other disease.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The Northern Lakes president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter, Mick Fiocchi spoke with Ken Krall about their efforts.

He was a longtime host of the big band show Your Favorites…with his daughter Tuckey Requa.  Charley grew up in Lakeforest, Illinois and spent summers in Phelps…where he located permanently in 1971.  WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski spoke with Charley a few days before his 97th birthday…which is today.

Iron County Forum Hones In On Economic Development

A forum in Iron County will take a closer look at economic drivers in the area, and brainstorm possible new ones.

The nonpartisan Iron County Citizens Forum this Wednesday at the Oma Town Hall is looking at economic sectors like timber, tourism and retirees. 

Coordinator Terry Daulton says the idea evolved out of discussions on how jobs factor into the Penokee Mine proposal.
