January Sales Slow, But Prices Rise for Northern Homes

A cold winter may be putting a damper on home sales in Wisconsin.  In the northern part of the state January sales were down about four percent, compared to the previous January…according to the Wisconsin Realtors Association.  Statewide sales were down almost seven percent.

But Economist David Clark says the cold weather could result in a spring rebound.

“The flip side may be that if colder than normal weather is causing some people to sit on the sidelines in December, January and February, it may simply shift them into March, April and May.”

A Rhinelander man is the state Libertarian Party chairman. They launched a campaign today in Madison to provide a political alternative.

Nicolet College director of Financial Aid, Jill Price says students and parents can get help with the package...

People Mimic Wildlife In Winter Habits

The winter has been a rough one for wildlife, but a DNR biologist says they find a way to cope.

Jeremy Holtz says the extended cold and deeper than recent winters snow totals place a challenge on wildlife....

 

"....every late winter they've struggled through the cold and the snow and the lack of food. Just like people, they're ready for spring...."

He says deer are specially adaptive to the winter...

Fencing Around Eland CWD Deer Without Problems

A DNR spokesperson says they have worked standard protocols to contain Chronic Wasting Disease from a deer at a farm south of Antigo.

81 deer from Wilderness Whitetails shooting preserve near Eland have been quarantined by the state. A five year old buck at the preserve tested positive for CWD after it was shot last November.

DNR Wildlife Section Chief Tami Ryan says they checked the fences at the farm at Eland and a related farm in Portage county and the fences were in good shape....

Seven Injured In Two Vilas County Crashes

Seven people have been injured in two separate traffic crashes in Vilas county. Both were reported Friday morning.

A two-vehicle crash was reported at 9:40 a.m. on Highway 70 near Eagle River. The Vilas Sheriff's office reports three people were injured and taken to Eagle River Memorial Hospital.

Deduction For Propane Cost Killed In Legislature

A Northwoods legislator is upset the Republican majority in the Assembly ignored an amendment she proposed to help people heating with propane. The amendment asked to send a bit of the budget surplus to provide a direct income tax deduction for every dollar spent in excess of two dollars per gallon of propane.

Ashland Democrat Janet Bewley says many of the downstate legislators don't have an idea so many people heat with propane..

Crash West Of Rhinelander Kills One

One person died, two others injured in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning west of Rhinelander.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department reports they were called shortly before 10 a.m. to a crash involving a passenger car and a van on Highway 8 and Shady Rest Road in the Town of Woodboro.

One person died at the scene and two others were transported to Ministry-St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander.

Several emergency response groups were at the scene. The investigation into the crash is continuing.

State Of The Tribes Highlights Differences, Goals

The new leader of the Menominee Nation told Wisconsin lawmakers that while deep differences exist on many issues, including the environment, cooperation is the goal.

While not directly addressing a proposed Kenosha casino by the Menominee Tribe....which is opposed by the Forest County Potawatomi Community... Chairwoman Laurie Boivin says dialog with the state concerning gambling compacts is positive for both sides...
