WPS Foundation Offering Grants To EMT's, Fire Dept.'s

Wisconsin Public Service Foundation is offering area fire departments and emergency responders up to a $2,000 grant for needed equipment and training. The Foundation is encouraging all emergency responder agencies to apply for its "Safety-It's Worth the Energy" grant between now and August 1.

Antigo Astronomer Searches for Signs of Distant Life

Maggie Turnbull lives in Antigo and works as a freelance astrobiologist.  

  It’s the study of the origin and future of life in the universe.  Turnbull has gained international recognition for her work cataloging star systems that could support life, and is now working with NASA on a telescope to better look at those systems.  WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski spoke with Turnbull over the phone.  

She says the problem is that stars give out so much light, it’s hard to even see the planets that orbit them.

Minocqua Police Respond to Theft

Minocqua police are working to identify two suspects involved in a theft Monday.  Officers responded to a theft from Kurt’s Island sport shop.  The suspect or suspects are reported to have walked into the business office, opened a drawer where cash was kept, stole $1500 and walked out of the business after talking with employees.  The Minocqua Police Department is following up on several leads and is asking for anyone with information to come forward.

RHS Places Fourth in Finance Quizbowl

Rhinelander High School finished in the top four in a statewide quizbowl that focused on financial literacy. 

Coach Patrick Kubeny is a business education teacher at RHS.  He says he’s very pleased about this year’s results from the Finance and Investment Challenge Bowl.

Journeys Marathon Draws Visitors With Northwoods Beauty

Hundreds of runners will take to the streets this weekend for the Journeys Marathon in Eagle River.  It’s a race known for its scenic beauty. 

It’s the 18th year of the annual race, and organizers are proud of the fact that Runner’s World magazine voted it one of the five best kept marathon secrets in the year 2000. 

Kim Emerson is Events Coordinator at the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce.  She says the race attracts people from all over the country who want to run in a natural setting.

Conference To Focus On Diabetes

The 11th Annual Northwoods Diabetes Update Conference is set for Tuesday in Minocqua. The conference is designed for healthcare professionals, but the public is invited to attend sessions beginning at 1 p.m. at no charge. The Conference is sponsored by UW-Superior at Reuland's Catering and Conference Center.

Zona Wick from the Iron County Health Department will talk about Iron county's successful pilot project "Healthy Living With Diabetes". That project focused on issues relating to people who can't naturally control blood sugar...

Northwoods Tourism Showed Growth In 2013

The state's Tourism Secretary says 2013 showed strong growth by travelers in Wisconsin and especially the Northwoods.

This week is national Travel and Tourism week.

Stephanie Klett says tourism had a 17 billion dollar impact on the state's economy last year up $700 million from the year before. More than 100 million visits from travelers. She says increasing the tourism marketing budget has paid off big dividends..

WXPR Wins WBA Award

WXPR received recognition from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Saturday night in Madison. The Ocean Epic of Walter Wendt by Community Features Editor Natalie Jablonski earned WXPR’s placement in the Best Features category for small markets.

In the Veteran’s Day feature, Wendt shared his experiences serving in the Navy during World War II. He described being aboard the U.S.S. Helena while under torpedo attack in Pearl Harbor.
