Prowler Arrested After Running Out Of Vilas Co. Home


Fast work by the Vilas County Sheriff's office results in the apprehension of an alleged prowler in an Arbor Vitae home.

Sheriff Joe Fath reports a 9-1-1 call came in at 3:42 a.m. Friday from a home on Highway 70 east. The spouse of the caller heard a noise in their dining room and saw a figure bent over the floor. When she touched the person the man jumped up and ran out the door. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

The Vilas Sheriff's office K9 unit and deputies looked around the area. The K9 unit followed tracks to a neighboring home.

Antigo Gets DOT Grant For Volm Expansion

The city of Antigo has picked up a large grant to improve access to a company that is expanding.

The Walker Administration announced the $100,000 Transportation Assistance Grant, which will lead to the design and resurfacing of the north end of Clermont Street to benefit the expansion of Volm Companies' Plaspack USA plant. The plastic and mesh bag manufacturer is building a new 36,900 square foot building at a cost of $4.1 million. That building will house resin silos and production equipment and the addition will manufacture high-tech mesh products.

Northwoods RN To Aid Arkansas Victims

Rhinelander resident Carol Miller is heading to Arkansas with the Red Cross.

A Rhinelander-area woman is in Arkansas to help  tornado victims north of Little Rock.

Tuesday, at least 30 people died in six states  affected by intense thunderstorms and tornados.

Carol Miller is a trained Red Cross Disaster Relief volunteer. She told Ken Krall she got the call to help out.

Miller says she will be working with people who lost medications, or devices in the storm she will help to find replacements.

This is Miller's seventh Red Cross deployment. She encouraged people to consider a donation.

School Administrator Faces Disorderly Conduct Charge

The District Administrator at the Three Lakes School has been arrested on an alleged Disorderly Conduct charge.

The complaint filed at the Oneida County courthouse alleges 59 year old George J. Karling of Minocqua was arrested for misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

The complaint says law enforcement officers were called to Karling's home the afternoon of April 19. He made an initial appearance before Judge Michael Bloom on April 21. He posted $150 cash bond that day. Karling will next be in court on May 23.

Northland Pines To Increase School Security

Northland Pines

One Northwoods school district is upping its security efforts.

The state Department of Public Instruction this week sent out a report saying they wanted to, among other tasks, increase safety at schools by increasing help for students with mental illness issues.

While school administrators were sifting through the recommendations, Northland Pines District Administrator Mike Ritchie says they have already upped security at their schools. He says they still do the standard drills, but have added others..

Lac du Flambeau Votes to Stop Funding Shullsburg Proposal

A failed referendum presents a major stumbling block for Lac du Flambeau’s off-reservation casino planned for southern Wisconsin.

Tribal members have voted not to continue funding the Shullsburg casino application process.

The margin was extremely close, with just two votes deciding the outcome.

Lac du Flambeau spokesperson Brandon Thoms says the next step is for the tribal council to discuss options with the Shullsburg work group.

Boat Monitors Prepare To Defend Lakes Against Invasives

Our lakes may still be covered in ice, but volunteer lake monitors are gearing up for a season of keeping invasive species at bay. 

Dozens of volunteers gathered this week in Rhinelander for a refresher on rules and protocols.  Oneida County Aquatic Invasives Coordinator Michele Sadauskas says they’re a fraction of those working in Oneida County alone.

It’s May and we’re still waiting for the ice to melt on most lakes in the Northwoods.  Lake Superior is still about halfway iced over.  But even when it’s thoroughly covered with ice, conditions can be treacherous.

Public Gets To See Possible New Downtown Rhinelander

Rhinelander residents and business owners had a chance to see five possible ideas for what a new downtown would look like.

City officials are planning an upgrade of the underground utilities in 2016 with a primary focus on Davenport, Brown and Stevens Streets. Along with the utility work upgrade, the city and Downtown Rhinelander would like to remake how the downtown appears at street level.

Gary Becker from Vierbicher Associates told attendees last night Rhinelander has a major economic impact in its trade area...
