Grants Requested To Build More Vilas Co. Broadband

Vilas County Economic Development Corporation has applied for a state grant to build more fast internet service.

White Lake Voters To Decide On School Referendum

One school district in the Northwoods has a referendum on tomorrow's spring ballot Tuesday.

White Lake school district in Langlade county is asking voters to spend $250,000 above the state-imposed cap limits each of the next three years. If approved, that referendum would replace a three-year, $200,000 request approved in 2011.

District Administrator Bill Fisher says voters in the district have a track record of supporting this type of referendum.....

Charges, Rebuttals In Hotly Contested Forest Co. Judge Race

The past and current judge would like the next term leading circuit court in Forest and Florence counties.

Incumbent Leon Stenz is being challenged by Robert Kennedy, Jr. whom Stenz defeated in 2008. Kennedy won election in 2002 . Kennedy has been in private practice.

Kennedy says during his term, he made the county more money in revenue than Judge Stenz...

"...I was a better manager"...

Hacked Email Can Lead to Stolen Identity

A Harshaw woman warns others that email is not a secure way of transmitting information. WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski sat down  with Elaine Strite to hear the story.

Elaine Strite  says her email account was hacked earlier this year when she opened an unsafe attachment. The hackers were then able access emails she sent years ago…containing personal information and bank account numbers.

Before the Wisconsin legislature changed the rules, you could have voiced your thoughts at a public hearing BEFORE the tower went up.

That’s no longer the case, as confirmed by Vilas County Corporation Counsel Martha Milanowski at Tuesday’s meeting of the Vilas county board of supervisors:

Rhinelander Hopeful For USDA Grant For Downtown

Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. and the city are in the planning stages for a projected $8 million makeover of the streets and infrastructure downtown within two years. The first bit of funding for the effort might be coming in.

Nicolet College Trustees Consider Possible Transitional Plan

The Nicolet College Board of Trustees has begun talking about the process they would take should they need to hire a new president.

Nicolet College President Libby Burmaster has been listed as a finalist for the president's position at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois. She had been a finalist for the presidency of Edgewood College in Madison. Edgewood College this week announced Dr. Scott Flanagan, a vice-president at the school, as it's president.

Iron County Elections Draw Outside Attention

A conservative political advocacy group funded by the billionaire Koch Brothers is dipping its hand into Iron County board elections.  Americans For Prosperity has been mailing fliers to Iron County residents. 

The fliers decry the influence of wealthy radical environmentalists who oppose a mine in Iron County, and point the finger at seven candidates who are challenging county board seats in next week’s election.

Wearing Purple For Epilepsy Awareness

Rhinelander students wore purple on Wednesday to spread awareness about epilepsy. 

Lynne and Bryan Wakely have an 18-year-old son named Eli who has frequent seizures.  In his case, he also needs help with daily routines, and has to be monitored 24 hours a day.  But his mom will be the first to tell you, their son nothing short of awesome. 

“He’s always, no matter how many seizures he has at night, he wakes up with a smile on his face, ready for the next day.”

Lewis Sentenced To Four Years In Prison

A Vilas county man will spend four years in prison for his role in the heroin death of a Rhinelander-area man in 2012.

28 year old Richard Lewis and co-defendant Jennifer Heiting , also of St. Germain, were arrested after the December, 2012 death of David Stahl. Stahl was found dead in a house in the town of Crescent from an overdose. A few weeks later Lewis and Heiting were arrested. Lewis pled guilty to First-Degree Reckless Homicide and drug delivery.
