One Person Dead, Another Injured In Downtown Rhinelander

One person has died and another was injured in an early Wednesday morning disturbance at a downtown Rhinelander tavern.

Rhinelander Police Chief Michael Steffes reports they were called shortly after midnight to Sackett's Bar at 66 North Brown Street. When officers arrived, two individuals were on the floor. A 48 year old man died at the scene. The other person on the floor was transported to Ministry-St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.

Family members are being notified before the deceased person's name is released.

The cold snap can cause problems for not only humans but pets and a Division of Emergency Management spokesperson says just because they have fur doesn't mean they're cold-proof.

Tod Pritchard says there are a few things to remember....

"....dogs and cats can get frostbitten ears, and nose and of course their paws are especially vulnerable to not only the cold but to other things like salt we put down on our sidewalk, and to anti-freeze which people know is very deadly to pets and that sometimes can leak out...."

Bill Would Make E-Cigarettes Legal In Bars, Restaurants

A bill in the Wisconsin Senate would update the language in Wisconsin's statewide smoking ban to make electronic cigarettes legal in public places. An e-cigarette is a device operated by a battery where the user inhales a water vapor. The user also inhales nicotine in the draw. The devices don't have the restrictions of tobacco cigarettes, which are banned in public places.

Oneida County Public Health Tobacco Coordinator Niki Kostrova says the feds have not yet approved them as a smoking cessation device....

Wisconsin's Economic Indicators Show Growth

Even though unemployment in the Northwoods remains stubborly high compared to other parts of the state, an economist says leading indicators are pointing up.

Scott Hodek is based in Eau Claire for the Department of Workforce Development.

Hodek says they look at the numbers like the manufacturing work week and inventories...

LDF Tribe Purchases Strawberry Island

In 1745, the Ojibwe defeated the Lakota Sioux in a battle at a place called Strawberry Island, now on  the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa reservation in Vilas county. It ended the Sioux dominance in this region. The island had been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, but to the Chippewa, it was a place of significant cultural and spiritual meaning that they did not own, until Monday.

Prescription Drug Abuse on the Rise

The Vilas County Sheriff says drug abuse continue to be a growing problem in the area.  Sheriff Joe Fath says the department works closely with Lac du Flambeau tribal police in its investigations. 

“Prescription medication, synthetic THC, heroin, those are the three big ones that we see affecting our communities.” 

Lac du Flambeau tribal leaders declared a state of emergency last spring to address a growing drug problem on the reservation.

Analyst: Gas Prices To Remain Stable In 2014

Just before Christmas, gas prices took a jump after falling to about $3.11.  

Patrick DeHaan, a petroleum analyst for the website Gas Buddy.com told Ken Krall this likely is a short-term rise.

DeHaan says another factor in rising gas prices, tension in the oil-producting Middle East, is beginning to lessen. He says that factor also is stabilizing prices.

Large Grant To Study Declining Forest Products Industry

A $600,000 state grant will enable a study as to why Wisconsin's forest products industry is declining while at the same time the number of trees has grown.

The Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association...headquartered in Rhinelander...and the Wisconsin County Forests Association are administering the grant. The funding came from an amendment put into the state budget by State Senator Tom Tiffany.
