Antigo Cheesemaker To Expand, Jobs Added

A $14 million expansion and renovation project at the Sartori cheese facilities in Antigo and Plymouth was announced Wednesday by the state.

The expansion is expected to bring 53 new jobs to the two facilities.

Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation spokesperson Mark Maley(mail-lee) says the project will enable the fourth-generation family-owned company to update equipment in its 100-year-old facility in Antigo, improve employee working conditions, enhance safety and sustainability initiatives while expanding capacity....

Bible Camp Rehearing Request Denied By Court

The 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago has denied a rehearing on a decision against a family hoping to build a bible camp and conference center on Squash Lake.

The Jaros Family has tried for nearly a decade to build the facility on family owned land in the town of Woodboro, Oneida county. Oneida county and the town of Woodboro, along with the Oneida County Board of Adjustment have all denied needed permits.

Decision Time Nearing for Mascot Bill; Opponents Want Veto

The Great Lakes Intertribal Council is calling on Governor Scott Walker to veto legislation regarding race-based mascots.  The bill makes it harder for a person to file a discrimination complaint against a school mascot.  It would require a petition of signatures and then proof of discrimination to get a mascot changed.

Michael Allen is director of the Great Lakes Intertribal Council.  He says the rule changes would encourage stereotyping of Native people.

Vilas County Snowmobile Trails to Open Early

Snowmobilers can hit the trails in Vilas County as of this Friday evening.

An early opening for Vilas County trails has snowmobile clubs and local businesses in good spirits.  The date was moved up from Tuesday December 17th to this Friday December 13th at 6 pm.

Vilas County Parks and Recreation Forester Dale Mayo says opening day usually happens after the four-day antlerless deer hunt ends.  But he says this year low temperatures and snow conditions seem to have discouraged many hunters.

La Du-Ives Takes Over Marathon County Jail

After months of turmoil and searching for a new administrator, the Marathon County

Jail again has a permanent leader.

Sandra La Du-Ives was selected by Marathon County to run the jail, which has been

experiencing several problems that climaxed with the assault of two corrections officers

by an inmate last winter.

La Du-Ives was the Deputy Administrator for Oneida County’s jail, and has spent the

last eight months as their Administrator after her supervisor, Kaye Juel, died with her

husband in a February house fire.

Teen Avoids Prison Time In Stabbing Incident

A Lac du Flambeau teen has avoided prison time in connection with the stabbing of his mother's boyfriend.

17 year old Christian Soulier had entered a no contest plea to amended felony charges concerning a January incident at his mother's home in Forest county. He initially had been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, but entered into a plea agreement with the state in return to a guilty plea to lesser charges.

Veterans Without Dental Ins. Can Join New Program

Veterans have another dental option as part of their VA healthcare.

V.A. spokesperson Brad Nelson says they're now offering dental isnurance at reduced premiums. He says veterans now get comprehensive dental benefits if they meet stringent eligibility standards, including total disability. But Nelson says the majority of veterans don't have full care. He says the VA has contracted with private companies MetLife and Delta Dental to provide insurance. He says the VA website has a link...

An influx of packages and letters make it a busy time of year for the US Postal Service

With the holiday season upon us, post office employees may find themselves up to their ears in packages.  The post office is asking you to mail early to avoid a last minute rush.

  More than two weeks before Christmas and the Rhinelander post office is already hopping with customers mailing cards and gifts.  Joan Santy walks in carrying a large package. 

“I like to mail early so I know they get it.  I’d feel bad if they didn’t get their presents on time, and this way I know it’s done, and I can relax a little bit.”

Law Enforcement On Lookout for Drunk Holiday Driving

Vilas and Oneida County Sheriff’s Departments are stepping up drunk driving patrols starting this weekend.  The statewide Booze and Belts campaigns also targets drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts. 

Vilas County Captain Russ Kennedy says grants from the state Department of Transportation pay for deputies to work overtime, targeting drunk driving and unbuckled seatbelts.

Eviction Vote is Deja Vu for LCO Harvest Camp

The Iron County Forestry Committee voted to evict the LCO Harvest Camp on the border of Ashland and Iron Counties.

Iron County Forestry and Parks committee members have again unanimously voted to evict the residents of the Harvest Camp near the site of a proposed iron mine.  

Members of the Lac Courte Oreilles tribe and other supporters have been camping on county land since early spring in opposition of Gogebic Taconite’s mine proposal.
