Bill Gives State Authority To Use Oxygen Monitoring

  This week Governor Walker signed a bill enabling the state to include additional types of newborn screening methods for newborns. Pediatrician Dr. Eunice Corujo-Incha at Ministry Health Care in Rhinelander says pulse oximetry testing has been used at Ministry Health Care for about two years....

     testing is a very simple procedure. You test the oxygen level in three areas of (the newborn's) extremities before discharge...."

Lawmakers to Hear Testimony on Changes to Education Standards

State lawmakers are expected to hear testimony Thursday on a bill that could spell changes for Common Core education standards. 

State Superintendent Tony Evers is appealing to parents and educators to speak out against the legislation, which would put standards in the hands of a legislative committee. 

In a video message Evers called this a Waterloo moment in Wisconsin education.

So How Cold Has It Been?

In-between chattering teeth, there's been lots of talk about just how cold the last 90 days has been....  

"....one of the coldest winters, not just for the last 10 years, but some of the coldest we've ever seen here in northern Wisconsin and most of the Upper Midwest...."

 That's WJFW-TV 12  Chief Meteorologist Matt Benz who says statistically, this winter has been a record-setter...

A growing backlog of cases in the Vilas County District Attorney's office has led the Lac du Flambeau tribe to offer $25,000 to help fund a part-time Administrative Secretary position.

The tribe presented the money this week to Vilas county officials. The money is matched by Vilas county contribution over three years.

Many of the cases in waiting are from Lac du Flambeau.

Land O' Lakes Art Show Spotlights Youth Work

Youth Art Month coordinators hope showcasing young people's art will let them know that creativity matters.

March is national Youth Art Month.  Land O' Lakes Area Artisans, or LOLA, is putting the spotlight on young artists’ work with a gallery exhibit. 

The show features almost ninety works from local elementary and homeschooled students. 

LOLA Programming Director Wendy Powalisz says she’s busy framing the art pieces…which are loosely inspired by the four seasons.

New Tourism Ad Aimed At Other State's Travelers

Though a new Department of Tourism ad doesn't feature much of northern Wisconsin, a Northwoods tourism leader says it will do good things for this region and the state.

The ad revealed this week, shows a remake of the former "Airplane" movie scene with Robert Hays and Kareen Abdul-Jabbar in a cockpit touring the state by air.

Steep Increase In Numbers Of Snowmobiles In Northwoods

Snowmobiling is becoming increasingly popular in the Northwoods.

Wisconsin's publicly registered snowmobile total is approaching a quarter-million and Northwoods registrations have increased by 163 percent since 2002.

The state last week released data on the number of registrations in Wisconsin. Oneida and Vilas are among the top five counties registering snowmobiles.

The DNR's Cathy Burrow says this region has seen a large growth in snowmobile registrations...

State Senate Passes Tax Cuts

The state Senate has approved a 504-million state tax cut package..

After about three hours of debate, the Senate passed the amended version of Governor Scott Walker's tax cut plan, on a 17-15 vote, with Republican Senator Dale Schultz joining Democrats on the vote.

Last week in Rhinelander, Walker told reporters he thinks everyone would get some tax benefits...

"....property taxes on a medium-value home in this state would go down by over $100. They would be lower than December of 2010...."
