Ruby's Pantry Heading to Lac du Flambeau

Ruby's Pantry will deliver to Lac du Flambeau on the second Tuesdays of each month.

Ruby’s Pantry will deliver to another distribution site in the Northwoods.  Lac du Flambeau will host the once-a-month food distribution on second Tuesdays at the Bingo Hall.    

Gloria Cobb is a case worker with the Lac du Flambeau economic support department.  She says many families in the area are feeling the financial strain.

Fundraiser Tuesday Helps Reduce Homeless Animal Numbers

The issue of spay and neutering pets is the backdrop for a fundraising event this Tuesday.

The Fix Is In is an area non-profit dedicated to providing spay and neutering services.

Spokesperson Karla Ortman says the goal is to reduce the number of homeless and/or unwanted pets....

 

"....unfortunately millions of cats and dogs throughout the world are homeless and by spay and neutering you help to prevent unwanted litters that may not find homes..."

State Supreme Court To Hear Voter ID Law

A Harshaw resident will have a seat in the courtroom Tuesday as the state Supreme Court hears the Voter ID case.

In October, 2011, the Wisconsin League of Women Voters filed suit saying the Wisconsin legislature violated the Sufferage Act of the state constitution.

WPS Repairing Power Outages Post Major Storm

Crews were restoring power across parts of the Northwoods Friday after a powerful winter storm cut power to utility customers.

Leah Van Zile from Wisconsin Public Service says scattered power outages happened as soon as the storm hit Thursday evening...

 

"....we did have outages reported all the way from the Wausau area to up north...Antigo, Minocqua, Crandon, Rhinelander and areas in between. We have seen scattered outages throughout the night. Fortunately it was nothing major. Our crews have been able to quickly respond...."

Birkie Skiers May Face Weather Challenges On Race Course and Off

Northwoods travelers to this weekend’s American Birkebeiner ski race may face a snowy trip.  

More than ten thousand skiers from 21 countries are flocking to Hayward, many braving significant snow and ice.

Rhinelander resident Joel Knutson delayed his travel plans until Friday morning in hopes of letting the storm pass.  He says the weather just adds another layer of logistics. 

“And then you add that to the already-neurotic pre-race preparation of wax, and lodging and food – it makes for a pretty interesting mental cocktail!”

Oneida County E-9-1-1 Gets Funding For Phones

Sometimes it takes quite a bit of money  to integrate a complex telephone system, but the Oneida county board went along with a request to make E-911 dispatching more efficient.

The board agreed to spend nearly $72, 000 from the general fund to pay for a phone console integration at the sheriff's department.

Legislature Considering More Arts Funding

ArtStart Rhinelander was among the groups appearing before the Assembly Tourism committee this week supporting a bill providing arts grant funding as part of economic development.

AB 760 would provide grants up to $40,000, with an annual cap of $250,000 total per year.

Representative Rob Swearingen of Rhinelander is a member of the Tourism committee..

WEDC: Favoring Republican Districts Over Democratic Ones?

Citizen Action of Wisconsin is claiming the state's public-private job generating agency...Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.. is funneling jobs to places in Republican districts and mostly ignoring Democratic districts. A WEDC spokesperson says that is not true.

Citizen Action has been described as leaning Democratic. On the Citizen Action website, their analysis claims fewer jobs were generated in the city of Milwaukee, but the state found jobs in the more Republican suburban areas. Citizen Action of Wisconsin leader Robert Kraig...

Meeting Elephants With a Sad Past

Rhinelander native Ann Eshelman worked for many years as a public defender in the Northwoods.  After retiring she headed to northeast Cambodia to volunteer at a rehabilitation center for aging elephants…that had been used for logging and other hard labor.  WXPR’s Natalie Jablonski talked with Eshelman about her experience volunteering at an elephant sanctuary that also has a big environmental and social impact.

New Boat Landing Possible On Rhinelander Flowage

A parcel of land along Highway 47 in Newbold is being eyed by the town board as a possible new boat landing site, pending Oneida county's negotiations with the town.

The lot along the Wisconsin River/Rhinelander Flowage was offered for sale at $45,000. The county board this week approved a move to give the county and town nine months to see if a deal could be worked out.

Newbold town supervisor Ed Hammer told the Oneida county board the town has an interest in developing a new landing....
