Northwoods Coalition Wants More Immunizations

A coalition is hoping to increase the number of immunizations across the Northwoods. Northwoods Immunization Coalition formed in 2005 to provide what a spokesperson says is accurate information.

Laurel Dreger at the Vilas County Health Department says county health departments and providers from several Northwoods counties are involved.. The group wants to decrease the vaccine preventable diseases in several age groups..

Wisconsin Public Service Asks For Rate Request

Wisconsin Public Service electric customers are being asked to pay eight-percent more to keep their lights on next year.

The utility said today that it asked state regulators for a rate hike that would charge the average residential customer six-dollars more per month.

WPS' Rate Case Consultant Pat Campshure says there are several different reasons for the rate increase...

Harsh Winter Sends Northwoods Residents Flying

The long, cold, nasty winter had one positive side effect: more people got on flights out of Rhinelander for warmer places.

That assessment about passenger boarding for the first quarter of 2014 from Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport manager Joe Brauer...

"...actually our passenger enplanements are looking good. We're probably up about 20 percent as far as departures out of here, and we're up about 10 percent for people deplaning here at the airport...."

Brauer has a suspicion as to why the numbers were up in the bitter cold season...

Avoid Oak Wilt: Don't Prune Too Soon

If an oak tree rapidly loses its leaves, it could be due to oak wilt.

Now that it’s April, experts say don't prune oak trees until after July…if you want to keep them safe from the oak wilt pathogen.  Oak wilt is a deadly fungus that gets transmitted through tiny sap beetles. 

DNR Forest Health specialist Brian Schwingle says oak wilt works in a similar way as Dutch elm disease, which devastated North American elm populations in the 20th century.  Both are fungal diseases spread through beetles.  But Schwingle says out of the two, oak wilt is much easier to prevent.

The first Tuesday in April brings Wisconsin voters to the polls for the spring election.

There are many local races on the ballot today.

In Forest county, a judge  will be elected between incumbent Leon Stenz and challenger Robert Kennedy, Jr. In White Lake, voters will decide whether to exceed state mandated revenue limits for three more years.

Nicolet Project to Feature Daily Poems This Month

Nicolet College is celebrating National Poetry Month with a poem a day. 

The Poetry Project invites students and community members to submit original poems.  They’ll be featured on the project’s website

Nicolet instructor and Project Coordinator Ocie Kilgus says the idea came from wanting to build community on campus. 

“Because we all share that common theme of trying to understand ourselves and others, and life in general.  The reading of poetry gives us that kind of insight to common experiences.”

Grants Requested To Build More Vilas Co. Broadband

Vilas County Economic Development Corporation has applied for a state grant to build more fast internet service.

Barry McLeane manages the Corporation's business incubators and sits on their board. He says they've applied to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin for part of a half-million dollar pool of grant money. They've forged a public-private partnership as he explains...

White Lake Voters To Decide On School Referendum

One school district in the Northwoods has a referendum on tomorrow's spring ballot Tuesday.

White Lake school district in Langlade county is asking voters to spend $250,000 above the state-imposed cap limits each of the next three years. If approved, that referendum would replace a three-year, $200,000 request approved in 2011.

District Administrator Bill Fisher says voters in the district have a track record of supporting this type of referendum.....
