Lending a Hand in Denver, CO

Rescue crews helped evacuate Fort Carson, Colorado after flooding shut down roads in the area.

A Rhinelander volunteer is in Colorado with the American Red Cross.  Carol Miller is stationed at Disaster Relief Headquarters near Denver, south of where the floods have done the most damage.  

She says there are 600 volunteers on the scene with hundreds more set to arrive.  The job of Red Cross nurses is to take care of those who get sick or injured while volunteering for FEMA or other partner organizations.

Vilas County Tour Will Update Business Plans

The Vilas County Fall Accomodation Tour and Workshop is being held next month and business owners will see whether their business plan works, or not.


The annual tour is co-sponsored by the Vilas County Tourism and Publicity Department, Vilas County Chamber and the Northwoods Chapter of the Hotel and Lodging Association.


It's hosted this year by the Manitowish Waters Chamber.

Illegal Tobacco Sales To Minors Drops In Northwoods

The Oneida County Health Department administers tobacco law compliance checks in a six county northern region.

Fourth graders from Central Intermediate School in Rhinelander had a chance to learn about invasive species Thursday, on an environmental education field trip. 

Michele Sadauskas is passing around Louis – a preserved sea lamprey to a group of kids sitting on the floor at CAVOC, the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom.   Sadauskas is the Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for Oneida County.  She’s here today to give kids a primer – what exactly is an AIS?

First Larger Walleye Fingerlings Released in Lake Minocqua

The first stocking resulting from the state initiative to raise larger walleyes for Northwoods lakes began Thursday morning in Woodruff and Minocqua.

DNR crews were cornering then netting out the 8 inch fish from a rearing pond at the Art Oehmcke Hatchery in Woodruff.

It's part of an $10 million dollar state-funded effort to expand production at DNR state fish hatcheries. Production should increase five times to over 500,000 fingerlings by 2016. Sports groups have expressed concerns about the walleye population.

Motorcycle Crash Victim Dies

One of the two motorcyclists injured in a crash last weekend north of Tomahawk has died.


The Oneida County Sheriff's Department reports 50-year-old Benjamin J. Guite, Sr. of Merrill died Wednesday at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. The second motorcyclist, 49 year old Lynette A. Haman of Elkhorn, Wisconsin was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. Her condition was not released.

Flu Season Is Underway In Northwoods

Besides the beginning of the football season, it's also the beginning of the flu season. Health officials say it's a good time to consider a flu shot.


Oneida County Public Health Nurse Dawn Van Den Heuvel has some tips....


 



"....recommended for anyone over the age of 6 months and if they are under six months, they cannot get a flu shot. It's really important that anyone that has a small infant, daycare, or works with a small infant gets their flu shots...."

Northern Schools Fare Well By State Standards

Report cards are out for all Wisconsin schools and districts.

School report cards are in, and Northwoods school districts are on track or exceeding expectations. 

The statewide performance report ranks schools on measures like student achievement, attendance and college readiness. Schools get placed in one of five categories between "failing" and "significantly exceeding expectations."

Northland Pines schools in Eagle River was rated as "exceeding expectations". District Administrator Dr.  Mike Richie says the numbers are positive.

Tiffany Echoes County's Desire For More Cutting

Tom Tiffany is calling for bigger timber harvests in the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest.

State Senator Tom Tiffany is supporting Oneida County’s call for increased cutting in the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest.  

The county board passed a resolution Tuesday asking federal officials and members of Congress to bring the national forest harvest up to its allowable level.  Senator Tiffany says after widespread clear-cutting a hundred years ago, the pendulum has now swung too far the other way.

Ministry Health Care and Quality Health Solutions have announced a partnership that a spokesperson says should help both organizations improve patient care.


 


Quality Health Solutions a collaborative group of Wisconsin health care systems and the Medical College of Wisconsin. QHS is expanding its accountable care network.
