Flu Season Is Underway In Northwoods

Besides the beginning of the football season, it's also the beginning of the flu season. Health officials say it's a good time to consider a flu shot.


Oneida County Public Health Nurse Dawn Van Den Heuvel has some tips....


 



"....recommended for anyone over the age of 6 months and if they are under six months, they cannot get a flu shot. It's really important that anyone that has a small infant, daycare, or works with a small infant gets their flu shots...."

Northern Schools Fare Well By State Standards

Report cards are out for all Wisconsin schools and districts.

School report cards are in, and Northwoods school districts are on track or exceeding expectations. 

The statewide performance report ranks schools on measures like student achievement, attendance and college readiness. Schools get placed in one of five categories between "failing" and "significantly exceeding expectations."

Northland Pines schools in Eagle River was rated as "exceeding expectations". District Administrator Dr.  Mike Richie says the numbers are positive.

Tiffany Echoes County's Desire For More Cutting

State Senator Tom Tiffany is supporting Oneida County’s call for increased cutting in the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest.  

The county board passed a resolution Tuesday asking federal officials and members of Congress to bring the national forest harvest up to its allowable level.  Senator Tiffany says after widespread clear-cutting a hundred years ago, the pendulum has now swung too far the other way.

Ministry Health Care and Quality Health Solutions have announced a partnership that a spokesperson says should help both organizations improve patient care.


 


Quality Health Solutions a collaborative group of Wisconsin health care systems and the Medical College of Wisconsin. QHS is expanding its accountable care network.


Ministry Health Care senior vice-president Ronald Mahorek says the partnership is an effort to improve quality and lower costs through an accountable care organization. He gives an example...

Nicolet College Board Postpones LRC Decision

The Nicolet College Board of Trustees has voted to postpone a decision on sending proposals to remodel the Learning Resources Center to the state for review.


Meeting last night in Lac du Flambeau, the board decided it was better to put a community committee together to decide the best course of action.

WPS Looking For More Electric Power By 2019

Wisconsin Public Service officials say by 2019 they will need more power for this region. The utility serving much of the Northwoods says they have two options: buy power or generate more power. And if they decide to generate more power they've narrowed down to possible sites.

No Decision On Boathouse Roof Change

A resolution that would allow flat roofs on boathouses in Oneida county was postponed at Tuesday's county board meeting.


Planning and Development chair Scott Holowinski asked for the postponement after department Director Karl Jenrich heard from the DNR....


 



"....we submitted it to DNR to comment on the rule and Karl, this morning, got an email(from the DNR) with some changes that the committee should talk about before we debate this. So what I'd like to do is table this...."

Foresters Talk Northern Hardwoods at Annual Conference

This year's Wisconsin Society of American Foresters Conference is focusing on northern hardwoods.

More than a hundred and sixty foresters are gathering in northern Wisconsin Tuesday and Wednesday to talk about northern hardwoods.  

Minocqua is hosting the annual conference for the Wisconsin Society of American Foresters.  Organizer Carmen Hardin from the DNR’s Division of Forestry says this year’s topic is timely.
