Mine Opponents Dominate DNR Hearing

Hundreds showed up at the DNR's public hearing on Gogebic Taconite's preapplication and bulk sampling plan.

The Department of Natural Resources held its first public hearing on the Penokee Mine project Thursday.  Hundreds of people showed up in Hurley.

People came from far and wide to voice strong opinions on the proposal.  There were even a few speakers from the Navajo Nation in Arizona, and an Ashland, WI contingent actually biked the 40 miles to the hearing.  Cyclist Michael McKenna says they wanted to their voices to be heard:

Officials Say Vilas County Fair A Success

Good weather brought out tens of thousands of visitors to the Vilas County Fair which ended Sunday in Eagle River.


Fair Assistant Secretary Debra Eicher says the turnout was heavy...


 



"...it was very successful. We had so many new events. We had great attendance, somewhere between fifteen and twenty thousand(visitors) as best as we could tell because we have free admission..."


She says the public came forward with exhibits...

Late Blight Arrives in Northern Wisconsin

Late blight can affect leaves or other parts of potato and tomato plants.

A destructive plant fungus has been found in Langlade and Portage Counties, and could spread to other parts of Northern Wisconsin.  

Late blight affects tomato and potato plants. Steph Plaster is an Agriculture Agent for UW Extension Langlade County.  Plaster says check often for signs of late blight on almost any part of the plant.

Woman Pleads Not Guilty To 17 Embezzlement, Tax Fraud Charges

A woman charged with 17 felonies relating to her time working at Aqualand Manufacturing has entered not guilty pleas to all charges.


46 year old Lisa Saykally is charged with allegedly using company funds to pay off personal accounts when she was employed at the Woodruff firm from 1995 to 2011. She is the daughter of Aqualand's owners. Court documents indicate the amount of money involved is alleged to be more than $500,000 dollars. Most of the charges are felonies, including state tax fraud.

Elcho Clerk-Treasurer Faces 43 Charges

The town of Elcho's clerk-treasurer has been charged with 43 counts of misconduct in public office and forgery in Langlade county.


Online court records indicate 43 year old Melissa Bloechl of Elcho is facing one theft charge in excess of $10,000, two counts of forgery and forty counts of misconduct in public office. The complaint was filed Wednesday.

Fatal Traffic Crash In Oneida County

A 90 year old Wood county woman has died from a one vehicle crash in Oneida county.


The Oneida county sheriff's department reports Dorothy Tyler of Vesper died at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau of injuries sustained Tuesday morning. She died early Wednesday.


Deputies report the vehicle she was in, driven by 73 year old Ronald Tyler of Vesper, went out of control on county highway "Q" in the town of Schoepke and crashed.

Cash Bond Set For Suspect In Shooting of Uncle

A Rhinelander man has been charged with the Monday shooting of his uncle.


23 year old Marcus L. Alsteens of 645 Mason Street is charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery, negligent handling of a weapon, and injury by negligent use of a dangerous weapon, all with domestic abuse.
