Record Attendance at Oneida County Fair

Turnout at the Oneida County Fair last weekend broke the record for the four-day event.  Fair Coordinator Nancy Gehrig says the tally narrowly cleared 20,000.

“We beat our record attendance from last year which was around 17,800.  So every day the sun was shining and every day the fairgrounds here were filled with people.”

Oneida County 4H youth development agent Lynn Feldman says there were hundreds of entries for the fair exhibit at Rhinelander’s Pioneer Park.  And more than half of them were youth projects.

Clamping Down on Drunk Driving

Wisconsin has a goal of zero preventable traffic deaths, such as those from alcohol-related crashes.

Local law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on drunk driving.  It’s Wisconsin’s annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, running for two and a half weeks between August 16th and September 2nd.  

Lieutenant Dave Jaeger of the Minocqua Police Department says officers will be extra vigilant during this time.

“They’ll be doing more traffic enforcement.  You know, you keep a closer eye.  And you’re out there conducting more traffic contacts in an effort to eliminate or at least cut back on people making the wrong decision.”

A couch on asphalt is a good omen when contemplating entry in YMCA's Couch Potato Race at Rhinelander's PotatoFest August 31.

Seeing a couch in a parking lot is hardly a fortuitous event, until you're driving around town contemplating entry in the YMCA of the Northwoods' Couch Potato Race. The race will be held August 31 in conjunction with PotatoFest Rhinelander.

Camp American Legion Gets More Funding

Tuesday, Wisconsin's Department of Veteran's Affairs Secretary John Scocos will be in the Northwoods to talk about upgrades to Camp American Legion.


Scocos says from the recent budget, the veteran's camp in Lake Tomahawk will receive $50,000 to help the camp continue to serve military members and families with physical or psychological conditions...

Towers Critical For More Broadband Coverage: Consultant

Recent reports detailed how a previously little-known portion of the state budget bill heavily restricts local governments from stopping placement of new cellular telephone towers. But participants in a WXPR forum on broadband says changes could help get more local cell service to under served areas.

Northwoods Jobless Rate Near Double Lowest State Rate

The jobless rate in the Northwoods remains nearly double of some other areas of Wisconsin.


Unemployment numbers released last month by the state showed June joblessness in the region at 11.2 percent in Iron county, 9.6 precent in Forest county, 9.2 percent in both Langlade and Lincoln counties, 8.4 percent in Vilas county, 8 percent in Oneida county. Price county had the areas lowest rate at 6.4 percent.


State economist Tom Walsh in Wausau says statewide, unemployment usually rises in May and June due to the number of students entering the workforce....

Name Of Vilas County Traffic Victim Released

Vilas  county authorities have released the name of the man who died in a crash early Thursday morning in the town of Manitowish Waters.


20 year old Ezekiel Jonas of Manitowish Waters was killed in the single-vehicle wreck.


The crash happened near the intersection of Alder Lkae Road and Powell Road. When emergency responders arrived, they found a pickup truck had struck a tree. officials used a metal-cutting tool to pull the truck's driver from the vehicle. The driver was alone in the vehicle.

Group Still Hoping For Walker Medicaid Reversal

20 counties, including Oneida and Lincoln, have asked Governor Walker to allow them to access Medicaid money from the federal government to offset local health care expenses.


Earlier this year, Governor Walker notified the Obama Administration he would not be taking money for Wisconsin's version called BadgerCare from the Affordable Health Care Act to offset those costs.

Volunteers Needed for "Lets Go Fishing"

After a successful launch recently, the "Lets Go Fishing Northwoods" chapter is hoping to find some volunteer help to keep the program going. The program is for seniors and others who aren't likely to get a chance to fish. The boat is launched from the landing on Boom Lake in Rhinelander.


Stephanie Schroeder says they are hoping volunteers step forward for an upcoming training. They're looking for captains...
