Kwik-Trip Looking At OC Highway Dept. Property

Kwik Trip is in the process of opening a location on Rhinelander's east side and apparently they are eyeing a large location on the city's west side.

Oneida County Corporation Counsel Brian Desmond says the county has been approached by Kwik Trip to buy the land along Kemp Street-Highway 8 west now used by the county highway department. He says they've been talking to Kwik Trip for about a year....

Home Sales Remain Slow, Despite Warmer Temps

For the fifth month in a row Wisconsin’s housing market is looking sluggish compared to last year.

Numbers from the Wisconsin Realtors Association show statewide sales fell almost seven percent in May, compared to 2013.  In the Northern part of the state sales dropped by less than four percent, though the region has seen slower sales for 2014 as a whole.    

Marquette University Economist David Clark says the May numbers reveal that the weather hasn’t been the only factor dampening home sales this year.

District Reaches Settlement With Assistant Superintendent

A civil suit filed by Rhinelander School District Assistant Superintendent
David Wall against the school district has ended with a joint announcement
of a settlement.

Wall filed the suit in Oneida County Circuit Court in February, saying he
was owed money from raises that did not receive dating back to a 2007 contract.

No settlement terms were announced, but Wall did say he would retire from
the district when his contract ends June 30. He worked for the district for
17 years.

WPS Plans to Merge With WE Energies

Two of Wisconsin's largest utilities plan to merge, if a deal announced Monday is approved.

Wisconsin Public Service says customers won’t see rate changes as a result of two utility companies merging. 

The parent company of WE Energies plans to buy Integrys Energy Group, the parent company of WPS, in a deal totaling $9 billion. 

  The new company will be called Wisconsin Electric Corporation or W-E-C Energy, and will serve over 4.3 million gas and electric customers.

WPS Spokesperson Lisa Prunty says the merger will make for a stronger company.

Early Screening For Heroin, Opioids, Alcohol Emphasized

The heroin and opioid  addiction problems troubling many Wisconsin communities, including those here in the Northwoods,  has caught the attention of one health advocacy group.

Citizen Action of Wisconsin is launching an initiative to increase access to effecting drug screening and intervention services for youth.

Citizen Action's Kevin Kane says they're looking at early intervention to stop greater, and more costly, problems later....

ADRC Of Northwoods Took 10 Thousand Calls Last Year

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Northwoods is growing quickly as more older adults and those with disabilities turn to the agency with questions.  The state ADRC concept arose as a type of one-stop shopping for people needing help. The agency works under a contract with the state and helps people with questions find resources.

Most People Install Child Car Seats Improperly

Critical Need For Blood As MASH Drive Nears

For one day early next month, Pioneer Park in Rhinelander will look like a M.A.S.H. unit. Like a real MASH unit, the intent is to save lives.

A blood collection on that theme will be held July 8 at Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Collection spokesperson Jerry Shidell says summer is a time of increased need, but blood supplies are lower....
