One person died in a Saturday traffic crash in Langlade county.

Sheriff William Greening reports Saturday afternoon a vehicle was reported to have left Flak Road in eastern Langlade county and ended up in a wooded area. Deputies located the vehicle about one mile north of Muraski Road. One person was found dead in the vehicle.

Reports indicated the driver was headed south on Flak Road and failed to negotiate a curve and ended in the woods.

The driver was said to be from Langlade county.

No other information was released.

Trout Lake Open House Reveals Much About Lakes

At a recent open house for UW Trout Lake Station near Boulder Junction, visitors got to experience research projects "hands on". The annual event  featured  interesting displays telling stories of our lakes  and what is within them.

Vince Butitta, an undergraduate student of Lawrence University and a graduate student of UW Madison’s Center of Limnology,  spoke of his research at the center....

The DNR and the U.S. Forest Service have announced an agreement where the state and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest will partner on forest management within the 1.5 million acres of the state's only national forest. It's under the 2014 Farm Bill called Good Neighbor authority.

Under the agreement, the amount of timber offered for harvest that's in an approved plan will increase 25 percent to more than 100 million board feet in 2016.

Forest Supervisor Paul Strong says the extra revenue will be trusted to the state...

Four student firefighters from the Blackwell Job Corps Center near Laona are on their way to Oregon as part of a Wisconsin interagency firefighting crew.

The U.S. Forest Service oversees the Job Corps Center in Forest county. Forest Service spokesperson Hilary Markin says   the crew left Wisconsin  Monday traveling to Redmond, Oregon, where they will get their assignment....

A Rhinelander man  was captured early Thursday afternoon after being sought by at least two county sheriff's departments for  allegedly pepper spraying a Lincoln county sheriff's deputy.

27 year old Steven Morris of Rhinelander was driving a car early Thursday morning on Lincoln county "A" and Highway 51 near Tomahawk. A deputy pulled Morris over to  question him. During the stop, Morris  took off on foot and the deputy and him fought. Morris is reported to have allegedly pepper sprayed the deputy then fled again.

K-9 Unit Approved By Town Board With Conditions

Minocqua town supervisors are agreeable to a Minocqua police dog program but supporters need to come up with $81,000 before final board approval.

Last night’s board action gives the department a green light for community fundraising. It will cost roughly $20,500 to buy the dog and to train the K-9 team. The remainder of the $81,000 is for a police vehicle. Supporters say they have about $30,000 in hand already and promise it won’t cost taxpayers anything.

Four people were hospitalized this week with the fungal infection blastomycosis after a tubing trip down the Wolf River towards New London. Northern Wisconsin is one of the nation's hotspots for the problem.

Most of the cases each year occur in animals, mainly dogs. Retired Rhinelander-area veterinarian says Dr. Ron Reupert says 'blasto' spores are  inhaled in a dry form into the lung from the soil. He says the lungs of humans or dogs are a perfect spot for the spores to grow....

Firefighters from Wisconsin have joined the battle against wildfires in northern California. One  detail is  near Willow Creek, California involves Suzanne Flory  from the U.S. Forest Service office based in Rhinelander.

Flory is a veteran Public Information Officer at these kinds of events and says this fire was caused by extremely dry conditions and lots of lightning last Thursday...

DNR  biologists have confirmed cougar sightings last month southwest of Elcho in Langlade County .
 DNR large carnivore specialist Dave MacFarland in Rhinelander says the cat was caught on trail cameras last month...

" the past week the DNR has received two different pictures from different land owners of pictures of cougars in Langlade county. Both of those pictures were taken on separate properties, both on the ninth of July..."

He says the public should not be alarmed...
