$400 Fee Rise For UW Students Announced

Wisconsin.gov

A Northwoods Democrat thinks deep budget cuts placed on the UW system during the last budget cycle will come home to roost on student tuition beginning this fall.

25th District State Senator Janey Bewley of Delta, whose district includes parts of Vilas, Iron and Price counties, says the recent news that the UW system said it would raise fees came as no surprise to her....

"....we know that the UW system has been squeezed dry. In order to make up for the gap, $250 million were cut, of course it will go into fees. It's the only thing the (UW System) can do to legally raise revenue...."

Bewley says roughly $233 million dollars in the last budget was directed toward the state's private voucher school system.

Bewley supports the UW request for an additional $400 per student in financial aid resources to help offset the damage from the last two state budgets. Bewley called Governor Walker and the Joint Finance Committee to commit to the request.
