8-1-1 Could Save You Thousands of $$$$

en.wikipedia.org

The temptation is to get out and get those projects done once the snow has left us. But check before you dig says a utility spokesperson.

Leah VanZile from Wisconsin Public Service says a quick call to the free 8-1-1 Diggers Hotline could save you from a real problem...

"....WPS customers request over 126,000 locates through the state's free Diggers Hotline service. Last year we had over 175 accidental gas line hits resulting in damage. There are a lot of pipes and wires buried under the ground, both utility, electric, gas, telecommunication. It's important that customers call 8-1-1 if they're planning to do any digging this spring...."

That damage could be costly. State law allows for forfeitures and repayments should a utility line be damaged.

After submitting your locate request with Diggers Hotline the underground lines in the area of your worksite will be marked by the facility owners with colored paint and flags.  Each color indicates a different type of facility. As an example. yellow indicates natural gas lines and red indicates electric.

More information is on the website diggershotline.com or Wisconsin Public Service's website.
