Area Kids Learn What it Takes to be a Manufacturer

Nicolet College

Nearly 600 local eighth grade students enrolled in shop classes participated in the Heavy Metal Tour at Nicolet College this afternoon. The workshop featured tours of local manufacturing plants, and hands-on activities in mechanical, Industrial and welding labs. Samantha from Northwoods Community Secondary School participated in the workshops and says she isn’t interested in the manufacturing business, but thought touring the ABX plant was an exciting experience.

“…and we saw how they made plastic and got to see the different engines and how they design them. I think it’s really cool how they set them up, like how they start from nothing and they get this big machine that has a lot of power.”

Kelly Anunson is the Dual Credits Coordinator at Nicolet College and says the workshop is designed to equip kids with confidence when looking for a career path that best fits their interests.

“…We are showing students the high-tech skills that are available to them in manufacturing careers and to get rid of the old stigma that factories are not dirty anymore; these are high-tech robotics that they’re working with…”

Anunson says while it’s important for kids to develop career interests at an early age, she says emphasizing the work ethic and training needed to compete in the field is crucial.
