Area Man Recognized by World News Organization For Rehabilitation Efforts

Wild Instincts

A Rhinelander man’s instincts led him to his lifelong passion and career, but he’s also put Rhinelander on the map as one of the top rehab centers in the country.

Mark Naniot has been mending orphaned and injured wildlife for nearly 40 years, and is the rehab director for Wild Instincts in Rhinelander.

Naniot’s rehab center is one of the few facilities that specializes in North American River Otter rehab and that’s drawn attention from of one of the largest news organizations in the world. The British Broadcasting Corporation, or commonly known as the BBC, has put together wildlife documentaries across countries, and they’ve paid Wild Instincts multiple visits to film the trials and triumphs of otter rehabilitation. I met with Naniot a while back and he gave me a brief tour of the grounds…

Because he limits human interaction as much as possible, we couldn’t spend too much time outside talking, so we moved things inside to talk about his work and the BBC’s project.

Naniot says the BBC crew will film a couple of more times then will spend a year putting the documentary together. The BBC crew filming the documentary couldn’t be reached for comment.
