Students from Tomahawk won in two categories as Wisconsin Public Service held it's 21st annual Solar Olympics this week in Green Bay. High schools from across the WPS service area participated.
Spokesperson Leah Van Zile says the schools showcase their solar knowledge and is administered by the non-profit WPS Community Foundation.
The Foundation works to expand knowledge about renewable energy...
"....it's a program WPS brings to our service area. Of those 63 high schools in the WPS service area, 56 are enrolled in the Solarwise For Schools program...."
Van Zile says there are 14 different competitions...
"....for example we have a solar race car event, solar water heater competition, solar cooker, solar sculpture, solar photography, solar design, many different areas where students can enter a solar-related project."
Van Zile says there are gold, silver and bronze awards for the top three schools in each competition catagory. She says more than 200 students participated from 23 schools. The schools get a curriculum to teach about renewable energy but they also get solar panels on the schools which can save money. Tomahawk took the gold in the solar car competition and solar sculpture.
Students from Rhinelander, and Elcho also competed.
