Baldwin Backs Good Neighbor, Iran Deals

Wisconsin U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin stopped in Rhinelander Thursday afternoon to talk about the recent agreement between the U.S. Forest Service and the state concerning timber management in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Authorized in a recent Farm Bill, it allows the Forest Service to work with other agencies managing its assets, often called the "Good Neighbor" policy.

Baldwin says she supports the move, saying it will expand sales on U.S. Forest Service lands...

"....so stewardship and Good Neighbor authority were parts of that. I've been very proud of that advocacy and to see Wisconsin with the potential of being the lead state in the country in modeling this new expanded authority...."

Under the agreement, the amount of timber offered for harvest that's in an approved plan will increase 25 percent to more than 100 million board feet in 2016.

While timber harvest will rise, the DNR and the Forest Service will eventually use the extra money to fund restoration within the forest.

Forest products professionals for years had asked for more production to come from the national forests.

Baldwin also reiterated her support for the Iran nuclear deal proposed by the Obama Administration.

While most Congressional Republicans don't like it, and even a few Democrats are questioning the deal, Baldwin says she supports the deal. She says the U.S. had to work to make sure Iran never developed a nuclear weapon...

"....a very strong agreement has been reached that doesn't rely on trust but instead relies on verification and intrusive inspections to make sure that any pathway to acquisition or development of a nuclear weapon by Iran would be blocked...."

Baldwin is  a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. She says the issue is not partisan. She says negotiated agreement has worked before to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.
