Big Storm Coming--Official Says Be Prepared

It appears that southwest Wisconsin, the state's mid-section, and Lake Superior will get the brunt of the Groundhog Day snowstorm that's moving in.

The National Weather Service says the snow and strong winds will begin at mid-to-late morning in the western half of the state -- and some places could get freezing rain late Tuesday(2/2/16) before it snows again Wednesday.

Eight-to-12 inches are predicted for southwest Wisconsin by the time it's all over. Central areas and spots near Lake Superior can expect seven-to-eleven inches, the northwest could get from four-to-eleven inches, and the far south only expects two-to-five.

For many areas, it will be the first major snow since Christmas as the weather service says only four-inches fell in La Crosse in January -- one-half foot below normal. Tod Pritchard from Wisconsin Emergency Management says get the food and medicine you might need before the storm hits. He says there's likely to be windy conditions and that means for some the power might go out...

"....making sure you have some food that you don't need to heat up(if the power goes out) or keep fresh without refrigerating. Having the things you need if you have to hunker down in your home for the next 24 to 48 hours...."

Road conditions Tuesday night likely will be be very poor. Pritchard says stay home, but if you must go out, make sure you take along some food, water, blankets and charged cell phone if you slide off the road. Pritchard says speed is the problem when roads get poor. He reminds motorists to slow down.
