Bills To Return Wolf Status Draws Ire of HSUS

en.wikipedia.org

Bills have been introduced in Congress that could restore Wisconsin's wolf hunt -- and let farmers once again kill wolves which hurt their crops and livestock. House Republican Reid Ribble (8th-Wisconsin, Sherwood)  and Minnesota Representative John Kline have introduced bills to nullify a pair of decisions from federal judges last year. The includes the one from Washington district judge Beryl Howell in December, which restored grey wolves to their endangered status in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.

A spokesperson from Ribble's office said Ribble had been asked by farm groups to act because the current situation doesn't allow for the taking of wolves killing livestock as had been the case under state management.

But the president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle, says Congress is trying an 'end around' of the federal courts...

"....a series of federal courts, not just one court, not just one judge have ruled that the federal government essentially did not do well in terms of its delisting actions and the states over reached...."

The other proposal seeks to strike down a court ruling from last September involving wolves in Wyoming. Both rulings took away the states' authority to manage their own wolf populations -- including wolf hunts that went on for three seasons in Wisconsin before being snuffed out.
