"BioBlitz" This Weekend At SDR's CAVOC Facility

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Volunteers and nature enthusiasts are invited to help find and document the School District of Rhinelander’s biological diversity at the first-ever BioBlitz through Saturday.

The two-day event is sponsored by the School District of Rhinelander, the University of Wisconsin Extension and Stevens Point Learning, Experiences and Activities in Forestry (LEAF) program, the Forest County Potawatomi and the U.S. Forest Service. It's being held at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom known as CAVOC.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest spokesperson Hilary Markin says a couple of night time projects will take place...

".....we'll be looking at moths, we're going to set up black lights on white sheets and you get all the bugs that are attracted to the lights then you identify all the moths that we see. And we'll also do bats. One of our biolgists will be there doing some mist netting...."

Markin says they will be putting together a comprehensive list of species they find at the center located on South Shore Drive just east of Rhinelander.

Saturday the public is invited to come out Saturday morning to learn and explore. Friday evening activities begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday activities are from 7 a.m. to noon. More information is available on the Rhinelander School District's CAVOC website.
