Birdfest Friday and Saturday In Three Lakes

en.wikipedia.org

The Nicolet Bird Club of Three Lakes is celebrating World Migratory Bird Day this Friday night and Saturday and the public is invited.

Birdfest's goal is to foster bird conservation and education and to introduce the public to migrating birds. Friday night is a meet and greet at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts. Here's club president Bill Lamon...

"...Friday night begins with a little meet and greet...time to talk with other birders...and maybe get some private time with our keynote speaker. This year we have Alan Schwoegler, from Loonwatch. Alan's been with Loonwatch for 35 years and we're excited to have him as our keynote speaker...."

Schwoegler monitors loon activity on several lakes in Oneida county. Lamon says there are many more aspects to the loon than is widely known, including their migration. Lamon says there's new research on juvenile loons that will be available.

At 7:00 p.m., the documentary "The Messenger" will be shown, showing the struggle songbirds are having worldwide to survive. There is an admission charge with the evening including food and refreshments. This is a fundraiser for the Bird Club.

All Saturday morning activities will be held at the Thunder Lake Wildlife Area about a mile north of Three Lakes and are free.

"....Saturday we have a whole day of free events, starting at 7:30 in the morning with a very basic bird hike. Also we have a master bird bander, Bruce Bacon, who will be banding birds throughout the morning. We have a wildflower hike at 10:00 a.m. Loon calling contest at 11:00 a.m., For children under 10 we have bird house painting at 1:00 p.m. at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts, while everything else is at the Thunder Lake Wildlife Area...."
