Boulder Junction Chamber Gets JEM Grant For Triathlon

An unusual third year of funding for a Boulder Junction event was announced earlier this week.

Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett was on hand to present a $14,000 Joint Effort Marketing grant to the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce to promote the White Deer Triathlon next spring.

Chamber Director Theresa Smith says it's unusual for the Department of Tourism to provide a JEM grant for three straight years...

"....last year we had 269 triathletes registered. The economic impact, which the Department of Tourism recognizes, is over $250,000 to Boulder Junction. That is why they are so willing to market the event...."

Smith says the event drew a nice attendance at a time when traditionally not many visitors are around and this helped...

"....many times communities aren't granted that third year, but our grant was so well written and they recognize what it is doing for the Boulder Junction community on a weekend that generally doesn't have a whole lot of people in town just before Memorial Day...."

The White Deer Triathlon replaces the traditional swimming component of the race with kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddling in order to attract a wider range of participants. In 2017, the race will also offer a relay division option. Additional weekend activities include all-day bike and paddle events the day after the triathlon.
