A Northwoods Veteran's Service Officer says everyone should pause and thank a person who served the country this Veteran's Day.
Oneida County V.S.O. Tammy Walters says the recognition by the public of the sacrifices many have made is important...
"....the sacrifices they've made are really unimaginable to most people, but they have made many sacrifices. Some will make sacrifices for the rest of their lives. I think as Americans we owe that to veterans. We owe this to them..."
Walters says it means much to veterans to say thank you for their service and says it wasn't always that way...
"....Viet Nam veterans, they've told me many times, how much(thanks) means to them because they were not thanked when they came back from Viet Nam. You can't imagine how much that means to someone. Our younger veterans have been thanked, they do get appreciated much more than the Viet Nam veterans were thanked. It sure means a lot..."
Walters will be participating in the annual observances in Rhinelander, first at 8:30 a.m. at James Williams Middle School, and at 11:00 a.m. at the Oneida County Courthouse. Nearly every community in the region has a service today.
President Wilson proclaimed Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, one year after the armistice was signed ending World War I. In 1954, Congress amended the name to Veteran's Day.
