CANtastic Returns To Aid Rhinelander Area Food Pantry

Wikimedia Commons

Cans of food are arranged into creative designs, judged, then the food donated to the local food pantry. That's the concept of the 8th Annual ' CANtastic' event, set for March 3 at the Rouman Cinema in Rhinelander.

Rhinelander Area Food Pantry Executive Director Guy Hansen ...

"....this is about a way for groups to come together and have some fun and build some structures out of food, both cans and boxes and the food eventually ends up at the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry and we distribute it to the folks in need...."

This year's build day is March 3 and the creations will be on display for two weeks to allow the public to view the designs and judge them. There's no charge to come into the cinema and look at the builds. People can vote for the one they want by putting a can or box of food in front of their favorite structure.

The top choice will get an award says Hansen....

"....so the hope is the different groups that build the structures will have food drives and have the cans donated once they figure out which cans they need...how many red cans...how many blue cans...and so on...and at the end the food goes to the food pantry...."

Hansen says if this year follows tradition, about 3,000-5,000 pounds of food goes to the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry....

"...the theme this year is 'TOON' INTO HUNGER...toon as in 'cartoon'. Any theme relating to cartoons or characters, or cartoon settings would be a good idea...."

Hansen says anyone interested in participating should contact the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry at their website rhinelanderareafoodpantry.orgRegistration forms are on the website or at the food pantry at 726 Coon Street weekday mornings.
