City Council Says No To Plowing Downtown Private Alley

WXPR News

A few weeks a ago the city of Rhinelander found out the city was plowing an alleyway behind several downtown businesses when they had no insurance protection to do so. Last night, the city officially said they wouldn't plow it.

For many years the city plowed the alley between King and Stevens Streets behind several downtown stores. When it was found out it was the private property of several businesses, the city and some owners were to see if a hold harmless arrangement could be worked out.

Council member Tom Gleason said it had to be everyone holding the city harmless or it wouldn't work.

One owner said no to giving the city a hold harmless agreement, so the council voted unanimously Monday to not plow that alley until further notice.

In other action, the council voted to have North Central Regional Planning Commission move forward on a grant to develop a city wide bicycle and pedestrian plan. In doing some routine housecleaning moves concerning city policies, the policy on access to city employees and representatives emails needed more discussion. That matter was returned to the Finance committee for more work.
