Consider Impacts Of Giving A Pet As A Gift

simplycatbreeds.org -

A leader at a local pet adoption facility says you should talk things through with someone before offering to gift a pet at Christmas.

Karen Norling is the Assistant Director of the Oneida County Human Society whose pet adoption center is in Rhinelander....

"...if you're considering giving a pet as a gift, you should make sure that everyone is actually looking for a pet they would like to keep. This time of year, after Christmas, a lot of animals are surrendered because because they were unwanted gifts...."

She says everyone should consent to getting a pet before the animal is adopted. She says it's also hard on the animal who goes from the shelter to strange surroundings then back to the shelter. Norling says the best way to approach an adoption is to go your local shelter and purchase a gift certificate. That way the person can pick out the pet for themselves. She says there are animals available for adoption, but make sure it is done in the best interests of the person and the pet.

Norling says another point is spay and neutering,  as it not only prevents unwanted animals, it also improves the health of the animals that are spay and neutered.
