DA Determines Officer Shooting Was Self-Defense

The Forest County District Attorney has determined no action will be taken against a Crandon police officer involved in a fatal shooting, determining the actions by the officer were justified.

D.A. Charles Simino said after reviewing all the evidence and witness statements that officer Ryan Wilson used reasonable force in an act of self-defense.

Documents indicate Wilson approached a car the night of October 22 after getting a report of a robbery. He approached a car with Dexter Baxter in it. Baxter was uncooperative, eventually moving outside the car where Baxter allegedly had a choke hold on Wilson. Wilson was unable to reach his taser and pepper spray and reported he was about to black out.

Simino says vehicle camera footage showed Baxter reaching for Wilson's firearm and was advised to stop or he would be shot. Baxter tried to choke Wilson again and gouge his eyes when Wilson shot Baxter three times. Baxter later died at a hospital. Simino said Wilson was within his rights of self-defense, given Baxter's alleged actions.

Baxter's toxicology report indicated he was intoxicated from drinking, and had marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamine in his system
