Decisions Pending On Conover-Phelps Bike Trail

The bid to construct a section of the proposed Conover-Phelps bike trail has come in over expectations and promoters are looking at ways to work things out. The trail would link Conover with Phelps.

Great Headwaters Trails Project Manager Jeff Currie says 9 of the 11 miles of proposed trail are fully engineered and shovel ready. Only one bid came in by the deadline last month, and Currie says they are trying to find options when the construction bid came in at more than $900,000, which was higher than projected. He says Phelps received a higher than expected sum from a previous grant, which could help...

"....so that extra 62, 63,000 is a nice offset to that extra price that is on that bid for the project in Conover...."

Currie says the first 3.2 miles will be the most costly in Conover because of building two bridges and a double culvert. There's also a wetlands to work through.. The remaining 8 miles will cost $600,000.

Currie says pending action by the Conover board next month, the first segment of the Conover-Phelps trail can get built this summer.
