Deer Hunters Asked To Help Monitor Northwoods CWD

en.wikipedia.org

The archery and crossbow hunts begin Saturday and for the first time, hunters in the Northwoods have to hunt under rules concerning Chronic Wasting Disease.

DNR wildlife health section chief Tami Ryan says the DNR will be testing deer from select areas of the state. Surveillance will focus on adult deer, since older deer are more likely to have the disease.

She says hunters getting dear in Oneida, Vilas and Forest counties can help by having their deer tested...

"...hunters can either contact the local DNR biologist and field staff out of their DNR Service Center, that would be the Rhinelander office, to learn how best to have their deer tested...."

She says in the era of electronic registration, successful hunters will be asked to help out...

"....many hunters will be harvesting deer and registering electronically. But in areas of the state where we are interested in doing CWD surveillance they're going to receive a message that will prompt them to bring their deer in for testing...."

Wildlife staff will be sampling deer in Oneida, Vilas, and Forest counties in the area around a CWD positive captive deer facility in Three Lakes.

For information regarding where to take your deer for sampling, on the DNR website search keywords "CWD sampling" or contact the DNR call center. Hunters are reminded to contact sampling stations in advance to verify hours of operation.
