Jill Zagar

An eighteen-year-old Antigo man is dead and two people injured following a shooting as students exited the Antigo High School prom late Saturday.

Early Sunday, 18 year old Jakob Wagner died at a Wausau hospital. An  Antigo Police officer heard gunfire in the the parking lot and shot Wagner. According to reports, two prom attendees were injured, a male Antigo high school student, and his date, a Madison area female. The young man was shot in the leg and required surgery, the young woman was treated and released.

A parent of a student who was witness to the incident said it was shocking...

“When you get that phone call, first of all the shock, the denial, this isn’t happening and then why is this happening. How did this happen? And then the emotions take over. First you’re terrified, then you’re angry, very angry, like why? Then the next emotion is “Please God let everyone be alright, and be there with the families, even the family of the shooter. This isn’t going to be easy for anybody. Just hope the community pulls itself back together and move on.”

Unconfirmed reports indicate Wagner arrived alone on a bicycle, with a rifle over his shoulder. A press release from the Antigo Police Department says the unnamed officer's immediate response prevented further injuries and possible casualties. The shooter never gained access to the building.

According to police reports, a search warrant has been executed at the shooter’s residence. The school went on lock down and parents were called to pick up their children. The Antigo School District will provide counseling services for students and staff in all schools on Monday.
