DNR Biologists and Volunteers work together to complete surveys

Each spring, Department of Natural Resources biologists and volunteers head outdoors to complete surveys in order to learn more about Wisconsin’s wildlife species. Wildlife population and harvest assessment specialist, Brian Dhuey says that the surveys help the DNR determine how populations of certain animals and doing, and how many permits will be available for the upcoming seasons.

“What they potentially can do is add to our fall forecast. To see how our populations are doing going into the fall and sometimes they do play into how many permits are available and season lengths, and things like that.”

Dhuey says the surveys are conducted along the sides of roads and reminds drivers that if they see someone standing on the side of the road by their vehicle, it isn’t necessarily bad and that it may just be a volunteer conducting a survey.

Survey results can be found on the DNR’s website using the keyword “reports”.
