DNR Hoping Hunters Report Wildlife Sightings

www.public-domain-image.com

As hunters take to the woods and waters this fall, the DNR is hoping they take a moment to note the wildlife they see OTHER than the animal or bird they're seeking.

The DNR kicking off its eighth annual Deer Hunter Wildlife Survey, a survey where hunters can record their observations of deer and other wildlife while out hunting. Survey results help track population trends for Wisconsin's deer herd and other wildlife...says wildlife research scientist Jessica Rees Lohr...

"....we are asking hunters to record not only deer, but other wildlife observations while they are out hunting. Those wildlife observations can be anything from owls and squirrels to bobcats and fishers. So basically all the species they see when they are out there. We have so many deer hunters in the state so they're a great resource for us to tap into. They're in every county, in every township, so we can get a great distribution from those hunters of the wildlife they are seeing in the state...."

The online survey is available on the DNR website by using the keywords Deer Hunter Wildlife. Tally sheets can be filled out either electronically or printed from the site. The survey period ends in January. Hunters can also send in their trail camera photos to another website.

Rees Lohr says a good number of hunters have turned in results to the survey in past years. She says it helps the DNR locate where certain creatures are abundant, or not.
