DNR Wolf Management Plan Coming In January

en.wikipedia.org

The public is expected to provide input on a  new DNR wolf management plan.

DNR carnivore specialist David MacFarland outlines what the agency will be doing...

"....the Department is in the process of developing a new wolf management plan that will serve as a guide to future management. We're at a point where we're going to be releasing a public draft. That will be done in early January...."

MacFarland says after that will be a public input period which will include written comments on the plan.

MacFarland says in addition to the comment period there will be meetings held across the state including here in the Northwoods.

Reports from other sources indicate the draft will contain four population options, including stabilizing the population where it stands now at 650 or so wolves, keep the 350-animal goal unchanged, keeping the population between 300 and 650 wolves, or setting a minimum floor of 350 wolves. The most recent plan had a goal of 350 wolves statewide.

The Wisconsin wolf hunt just concluded with 154 wolves taken. The majority taken using trapping techniques
